Macys, and I'm done being an idiot. Rant!

My question is, would you have bought the jackets anyway if you hadn't gotten to try them on first? If not, you were "showrooming," and that's not a practice I would feel good about. Macy's is spending money on floor space, staff, utilities, etc., so that you can have the experience of trying the goods on and seeing if you like them. They're hung out to dry if you take advantage of that service and then go buy them cheaper from a retailer that didn't invest in all that overhead for your convenience.

.
I am 150% comfortable "showrooming" from this point on in Macy's. They used deceptive advertising to first lure me into their store, and then charge me more for what I purchased while leading me to believe I was getting 60% off. I will now use Macy's to try clothes on with a totally clear conscience. And I'll buy what fits on Amazon.

Had they been honest about their prices I would have paid the few extra $$ to be able to try the jackets on, and that's not just lip service. I only go into stores to buy. I never showroomed in my life, not even for basses. But I will now. At Macy's only.

And yes, I have issues around this kind of thing. Not because it's something I need to examine in myself, either. It's because it's something I would never do.

In the long run, I like having brick-and-mortar stores around to have the shopping experience and try stuff out in person rather than rely on internet pictures and the vagaries of search engines to locate stuff I want. To me that's worth spending an extra $20 now and then. I do shop online, but mostly when it's stuff I can't readily find in brick-and-mortar stores - academic books, CDs from obscure artists, stuff like that.

I think if it were just a slightly higher regular priced item you would have a valid argument. The higher price is only half of @Joe Nerve 's point. The fact that Macy's claimed it was "60% off' AND it was $60 higher (or was it $40?) was the problem. It then becomes an issue worth drawing a line in the sand over in my view.

I don't think it should be illegal. But I won't validate the practice with my own money either.

And when Macy's finally fold and go into liquidation and the little children are crying and asking their loving parents "Why can't we see the Macy's parade this year Mommy and Daddy? "and the loving parents, choking back the tears themselves, have to reply that it's all because Nasty Joe Nerve wanted his 450 bucks back, you'll be hated and reviled throughout the centuries as the man who killed Macy's.....

No good trying to wriggle out of it by claiming that it wasn't just you.....The children will know....

The chaos theory isn't necessarily just a theory you know.....:mad::mad:.....

They are looking at building a new distro hub and my state is one of the candidates. They say it will be the size of a small town and have 50,000 full-time employees.

What do you think the property taxes are on a warehouse the size of a voting district in Houston? Where do you think many of their products are housed? Who do you think writes software and pulls orders? A quick Google search shows they have 541,900 employees currently. That's almost the population of Wyoming. Clearly they are paying salaries and benefits to SOMEBODY. Macy's has 140,000.

Do you have any idea how many millions of dollars Amazon and its executives donate to charity? Bezos alone has donated millions of dollars for medical research alone....and there are tons more donations as well.

I'm not an Amazon fanboy. In fact I rarely order from them. But your reasoning is backward. Amazon has more overhead by a TON than Macy's does. Sure, they do a ton more in sales. But claiming that Macy's has to charge more because they have more overhead is ridiculous.

Have you examined any of the local/state proposals to lure that huge distribution hub?
My region is also competing and boy, are they giving away the farm. You can flat out forget about collecting any realty tax.

Macy's paid $341 million of Income tax in 2016, with total revenues of ~26 billion.
Amazon paid $412 million of Income tax in 2016, with total revenues of ~136 billion.

It's no secret that Bezos does anything within his power to avoid paying a fair share. A look to the EU's decision to fine Amazon almost $300 million for "illegal tax advantage" pretty much sums it up for me.

I think that Amazon needs to be held to a much higher level of scrutiny that they currently enjoy.
WalMart (another favorite target of mine, but that is for another thread) paid $6.5 billion of Income Tax on revenues of ~500 billion. That's right, 16x as much as Amazon on just 4x the revenue.

My wife and I pay $1400 a month for medical insurance while working our butts off so we can let active drug addicts and many others who are capable of working but just do t want to - get much better medical benefits, for free. We also have a $500 deductible each, so the first $1000 medical expense comes out of our pocket anyhow.

I don't have any sympathy for Amazon, Sears, Macy's or whatever. There are many injustices happening. We all need to either roll with them, or find alternatives for ourselves.

I just try to do the best thing I can in any situation, without stepping on anyone else. Or BSing them to get what I want or need.

Needed a new winter coat. There's a Macys nearby and my wife had a 25% off coupon.

Saw 2 great Tommy Hilfiger jackets on sale for 60% off! Regular price $250 and $225. Score. I can't decide, and my wife likes them both so she says she'll buy me the other :). I love my wife. Anyhow... They tell us they can't take the 25% off because the jackets were already discounted. 60% off is still a great deal! We bought them.

Without getting into the math, cuz math is hard - I decided this time to research what I bought. Price on Amazon, without any sale - was cheaper than Macy's sale price!

I just re-orderd both jackets on Amazon for $40 less! Macys is getting theirs back tomorrow.

This kind of crap really gets to me for some reason. BS advertising/marketing. It should be against the law. I'm done with Macys.

I always wondered about their jewelry that they practically give away for free. 75% off THIS FRIDAY only, that they'll do for you on Tuesday cuz they like you, and still give you 25% off that price if you get one of their credit cards. I fell for that one last year and paid $60 for something for my wife that probably would have cost $40 on Amazon if I were able to find it there.
Why should it be against the law? They can sell the jackets for any price they want. You can buy them or not. Should it be against the law for you to sell a bass for more than the government thinks you should?

Deceptive advertising.

They lied about the price (yes, I get that they can charge whatever they want but they lied about the retail price), and they lied about the 25% off coupon - to get me into the store. If those weren't outright lies, they were at best deceptive marketing techniques.

Still a little puzzled by this rant.....

Presumably you were happy with the products that you purchased at Macy's and the price that you paid for them at the time....Otherwise why on earth would you have paid rather than walking out of the store....

Finding that you could have got them cheaper at Amazon once you got home hardly justifies an outpouring of discontent and hostility toward Macy's in my most humble opinion.....

Your mileage, clearly, may vary.....:D

I acknowledged earlier that I have issues with this kind of thing :). I'm working at being a perfect human being. Still have a ways to go.

I don't like liars.

Jackets weren't originally $250. They're $90 anywhere online. I just happened to order them from Amazon.

That's what Carvin's been doing with their liquidation sale. I love Carvin, wanted to buy some stuff... their "closeout" prices were higher than their regular "sale" prices.

I hate to beat you up on this, but if you're talking about Macy's in NYC proper, can you blame them? How much do you think they pay per square foot to operate in New York City? It's not really fair to expect them to operate without sustainable profit. For them to have to compete with the internet isn't fair because the internet will put them out of business in short order. You know everything in the city is more expensive, in general. It's the cost of living in the big city.

Amazon is morphing into something different, for sure. Maybe everything will even out in the end, but at the moment they still have the upper hand against brick and mortars because of the explosive growth they are experiencing.

Even Walmart's boom eventually subsided.
