Mahogany rules!

Mojo is a great sounding wood.
I love that almost every instrument posted on here sounds completely different, but ppl still know what the mahogany fundamental sounds like across those instruments.
Round enough, warm enough, punchy enough, lower mid bump...always seems to be very balanced.
There's a lot to be said for wood.

Love my mahogany '82 L-1000. I feel fortunate to have one from before the switch to other woods. The grain of the wood makes those early ones very attractive, as well as unique.

My two favorite basses are both mahogany - one even has a mahogany neck. My others are "swamp" ash and basswood.

My 3 favorite basses have mahogany bodies, as does the guitar I started my career with--the only one I kept.

My all African mahogany custom 22.5" scale bass made by Brian Fanner in Cape Town, South Africa for $850 shipped to Los Angeles. Looking for 23" scale flat wound strings, don't use round wound at all.

I'm not much on sound clips because it's so subjective and each person's computer audio can be so different. As soon as I get a set of flat wounds, I'll post how I like the sound, if I remember.

Would mahogany provide a good platform for a P bass project ? I mean would there be any benefit over the more traditional alder body? I am asking because I am a Les Paul player and SG player and couple years ago assembled a full mahogany body/neck telecaster. I now have a project to assemble a p bass and was wondering if mahogany would provide the same punch as the typical alder body?

Even kit basses can come in mahogany. Without the pickups it wouldn't sound as good though

I think i got lucky with it.. found it on Etsy of all places, haven't seen the same kit by "Albatross guitars" since i got mine. It was a mm knockoff and I upgraded the humbucker to a Seymour Duncan and added The fender Split P. Other personal touches here and there.

Yes it would. Mahogany is one of the nicest woods to work with which is why it and its "substitutes" are so popular.

Tonally, paint it a solid color and tell people it's alder. No one will hear the difference.

If I'm not mistaken, most Alembics have a mahogany core body wood. I know this is the case with the 4 Alembics I've owned over the years. Works well for me.

I'm glad this thread was posted. I forgot how much I love mahogany. If I ever have a customer bass built, I'll do mahogany!

2019 Les Paul, 2015 Birdsong Shortbass, 2014 SG. The Birdsong is Spanish cedar. It's very similiar to mahogany. It's just a touch warmer tone wise.
