Mains power supply for pedalboard

At 1hr 55mins of use the light on the Joyo JP-05 turned to yellow signifying 30-60% of charge left and I switched everything off 35 minutes later so it was running for 2.5 hours and still on yellow. Interestingly however after a few seconds I switched the Joyo back on and it would not power up the B6 although it was powering everything else on ok. I repeated this a very short time later and the B6 did then power up?

I’m going to continue the exercise tomorrow morning and see at what point it goes to red light (0-30% power remaining). I am wondering though whether after say another 30 minutes of use whether the Zoom B6 will just switch itself off even though the yellow light may still be on the Joyo?

At the moment I would say it will give sufficient power to do one of our typical gigs which is usually 2 x 45 minute sets plus encore (plus sound check 10 minutes), which combined is just under 2 hours overall usage. At some venues we may do a further set of say 30 minutes so that may need a quick charge between one of the sets to give a bit of confidence it will not give out.

Nice, it looks like it could work for me too 😃

I would probably want two, though. I like to have a larger margin for error.

Disappointed about that high pitched noise. Does it always do it? If you unplug the hungrier FX, does it improve?

I’ve read the noise is possibly due to mixing digital and analogue devices and the Joyo does not have true isolation between the channels. The B6 is the main power hungry device and it’s this which is causing the issue as the Joyo inline noise suppressor that I’ve introduced is only on that device’s 500mA supply. The Joyo ZGP is quite cheap anyway and I already had it.

I’m not sure yet regarding getting a second power brick, the B6 is the main culprit and I don’t think an individual supply for the other 2 items would make much difference as they are fairly low power demanding items but it would definitely put ‘x’ amount of minutes on the available run time.

I gave the Joyo JP-05 another 30 minutes this morning taking it up to 3 hours total. I went to give it a further go this evening, the yellow battery level is still showing however it was not sufficient to power up the Zoom B6 so it must be at the lower level of the power range (30-60%).

In theory 3 hours total should be enough for a gig, but for the next gig at least I will lay down a mains power lead “just in case”.

As it won’t power up the B6 (but is still within Joyo’s working available power range) it would be interesting to check exactly what voltage it is now putting out? If it was still giving out 9 volts then it should still power up the B6 so I’m suspecting it’s just under 9 volts. The other 2 items are still powering up as they are far less demanding.

Cioks 4 costs 3x more, but maybe keep the Joyo packaging if you need to return it and apply that $ to the Cioks. I recommended the Joyo in good faith, but I have nothing on my board as thirsty as your B6.

If I’m going to have to spend that much money I’d rather rethink my strategy and utilise an IEC socket within my pedalboard casing.

At the moment with what I have is going to give me 180 minutes of available power from the Joyo JP-05, of which I will normally need on a gig typically only 110-115 minutes.

I’m a bit disappointed that the Joyo’s battery power hasn’t lasted as long as I had expected, I sort of hoped it would do 4 hours minimum which would definitely have covered all eventualities and I do worry whether I might become too distracted/paranoid in constantly checking the battery indicator light while I’m gigging.

More importantly I could be doing a gig and once the light turns to yellow I won’t really know how long it will last as it is giving up before going to the lowest (red) light setting. I would be happier had it turned to red at least I know it’s nearly depleted but with it giving out on yellow I’m not sure?

I checked it again today, the yellow light is still on which is supposedly 30-60% power, my Line 6 G50 receiver and Boss BC-1X compressor are still working but there’s just not enough juice to power up my Zoom B6.

I need to have a long think about it, it might be that I return the Joyo for a refund, it was an Amazon purchase so I still have some time yet.

Messing around with the Joyo and my pedalboard tonight and it seems like if I only have the B6 connected it will power up and then I can reconnect the other 2 pedals and everything works? It seems like the B6 needs a lot of initial power to start it up and then it’s ok, which is probably why it hasn’t gone off while in use or the battery meter gone into the red, ie possibly once the B6 is up and running the Joyo can maintain its power requirements?

With all connected again I managed to get another 30 minutes run time out of the Joyo before the red power light came on. With the red light on however after switching everything off and just connecting the B6 the Joyo was unable to boot it up again like it did before.

Bit of a dilemma really, I had thought of switching everything off between sets to conserve battery power but the danger is if I do that the B6 might not start back up again! I suppose the answer is to do a gig with at and run my mains cable up to my pedalboard to quickly plug the mains adapter in just in case?

Your particular situation and it's potential solutions pedaled up past my paygrade a while back now.

Yep, unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be anyone out there in the same situation. The concept of being without a mains supply at gigs seems brilliant - if I can pull it off!

I have been in touch with Zoom themselves and have asked them if the B6 demands more power on startup which the Joyo can’t handle. Waiting for a reply back from them.

I did see an interesting post (possibly on TB or Basschat) whereby someone had connected 2 of the Joyo’s 500mA outlets together by means of an adapted cable into the power-in socket of a high powered pedal unit. I don’t understand the science behind this and how it would work, perhaps someone might jump in and enlighten?

2 things:
1) When I don’t want people borrowing my stuff (which I understand) I buy them their own.
2) Are you not helping them setup the PA? In my opinion, the best band dynamics happen when everyone works together to setup the common gear like PA’s and main extensions, then once that’s done everyone moves into their individual gear.

There are 2 guys who set up our (quite small) PA (our singer and our sound guy), deffo doesn’t take any more people.

They have long leads with trailing sockets etc etc which are required each side of the stage to power the PA speakers and lighting. They should run them to the venues power outlets at the rear of the stage but instead through laziness/convenience they take the power feed from my pedalboard mains cable.

The PA really is too small to require all band members to set up and only takes a matter of minutes. We all arrive at slightly different times and usually before all of the PA has arrived so we can’t just sit around waiting.

Well, I finally made a decision and have decided to send the Joyo back for a refund. Whilst I think the Joyo is a great product, I think the items on my pedalboard (500mA + 350mA + 90mA) are too demanding of it, I have 2 items which I think are too power hungry for the Joyo and it is not going to give me the confidence I need in doing a gig without worrying too much about whether it is going to last the night. Our next gig for example is 2 x 45 minute spots + 1 x 20 minute spot + encores + sound check.

I am still considering getting a panel mounted IEC socket to fit to the side of my Gorilla Pedalboard Case but for now I’m simply going to hold fire running my mains cable out until the PA and Lighting have all been set up and the band have laid down their relevant power supply cables.

Thanks guys for listening to my rants and for your advice and comments!
