I agree. I do not listen to the radio and haven't for many years. I pay $15/month for Spotify and create my own playlists. No commercials. If you are a musician, radio is old and tired on some frequencies and ridiculously phony and/or sterile on others. I honestly don't know how radio stations even survive. I guess they do because there are enough Joe Publics out there that are satisfied with what is traveling through the airwaves. Obviously, I'm not one of them.
That's a good attitude you have right there. How's that working out for you? Do you understand the meaning of the word respect? Oh, and being "sick of this forum turning into a retirement community" indicates that you are, indeed, taking all this personally.

Yeah, you're just getting old (as all of us are). The music you loved in your heyday was likely garbage to those 25 years older than you.
The music I loved in my teens, twenties and early thirties was garbage to my preceding generation. The music my 19 year old son loves is garbage to me...and thus the circle of life continues.

I'm ok with that as long as it's actually "music". Musicians actually playing their instruments.
I guess the prideful remark about being able to count out change is lost on me then? Some type of weird superiority complex? Cool. You do you, man. I can assure you, your cashier's inability to dole out proper change for whatever you just purchased is in no way influenced by them enjoying artists that you think suck.
I am sorry I started this thread. I should have known better. Lesson learned.
Most of the "new" singers can't sing without a studio to keep them sounding in key. You hear them live and they can't hold a note to save their life or they add effects to cover up how bad they are. That and the computer generated backup music makes me not listen to any of it. I can't stand going into stores playing the modern dribble. OK, rant over.

I can remember in the 70's listening to Into The Void - Black Sabbath in my room and thinking how could a human being write such incredibly awesome music. My dad busts into my room and says, "Turn that cr*p off!!!" It was then that I found out that the love and hate of music is a purely personal thing.
I just hope the irony of the two posts in succession aren't lost on only me...
I was asked if I was a cashier. I am not. Nothing wrong with being a cashier. There is something wrong with a cashier who can't do simple math though. Working for the government certainly doesn't make someone "superior." Most in the private sector look down on government employees in my experience.
Mainstream music outlets have become much more conservative than they were when I was growing up. Label budgets have also gotten considerably smaller. Add to that the fear of losing listeners due to rapidly diminishing attention spans and the fact that many other entertainment/distraction options now exist and are easily accessed (thanks mainly to the internet) and what you get is cookie-cutter, cheap-to-produce (relatively speaking) predictable pablum on an unprecedented scale. Sure, there was always bad pop, but anyone with half an ear can tell that there's been a significant shift in terms of the variety (and quality) one could expect to hear on mainstream playlists. Yes, it used to be better. No, it's not just because you're older. Yes, that meme of grandad from The Simpsons yelling at a cloud (the meme that is bound to pop up in this thread any minute now) is trite but to be expected.
It's everywhere. Everyone needs a billion percent return on investment so money only goes to stuff that is likely to yield a huge return. That's how we get a hundred movies about wolverine and whatever Adam Sandler does.
