Making a Pilgrimage to Bass Central

I'd look at some oddball stuff too -- anything that might have the spacing/ergonomics you like but might not be something you think would be your taste tonally -- something might surprise you. 
A am blessed to have several good music stores within a 20 mile radius here in Upstate New York's Capital District. I recently went south to NYC and checked out many of the famous music stores and believe it or not, not much better of a selection than my own area. No need to make a pilgrimage for me
I would like to suggest you consider allowing time to stop in Atlanta since you have to go through it to get to Orlando and stop in at the Atlanta Bass Gallery. It is an amazing place, much larger in size than Bass Central, large inventory of basses, amps and cabinets, and accessories. Jim the owner and Darron, his right hand man are two of the easiest people to deal with and VERY knowledgeable. I have bought alot of gear there and got a truly great deal every time. You can go to the website and check inventory and call and talk to Jim ahead of time. I think you will find this could give you more time to spend with the family in Orlando. Good luck to you

+1 I'm in Atlanta every year for a trade show and always stop in to visit Jim.
I went to visit my sister in FL and made a trek to Bass Central this week. Also not what I expected. Very small showroom in an out of the way suburb north of Orlando, but I had a very nice experience there. Perry and Mike grabbed about a dozen basses out of the warehouse for me to play (they told me they have about 800 bases there). They were very polite and attentive even though the phone was ringing off the hook. I can imagine the volume of sales they do.
I got to play a lot of interesting stuff. My favorite was a vintage tint ash/morado Will Lee Sadowsky Metro. Also played the ash/maple version which was too bright for my tastes. Got to check out the new Fender reissue '63 jazz bass and compare to an 60s custom shop model (both very nice but the '60s was a grand more). There were a couple sleepers on the wall that sounded better than expected- an Olympic white American special Fender P and a Lakland Skyline J04 in in sunburst with block inlays (I liked the neck on it better than the USA version).
I will definitely be giving them a call in the future if I decide to by a new bass.
