I also have a degree in English. I've found that it's a very useful degree to have because you can work in many different environments. However, if you have the means (money) to travel, I would recommend traveling, and perhaps working while you travel. The job market (at least here in the States) is dog crap, so you might as well travel. Sometimes opportunities arise when you are the odd duck in a different pond. Who knows, you might end up finding a cool little surf town in Japan and start your life there with a sexy Asian chick while teaching English. I would recommend traveling to areas of good surf. My two cents.
