Where I grew up in New Mexico we didn't have grass OR sidewalks.Growing up in Virginia we called it, "That strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street."

In Australia it’s called the “nature strip”.I grew up in Ohio and spent a lot of time around Akron. Even went to school there for awhile. Never heard the term "devil's strip". Everyone I know all over the state, including many in and around Akron, calls it a "treelawn", i.e., the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the street. But then again, I'm not in the business of getting people to buy newspapers.
