Man music stuff has gotten expensive

Well, in my mind, or should I say my wife's mind, 3k is a house.

It's all relative. One person's hovel is another's mansion. If you enjoy what you play, and are inspired to practice, then all is well. It doesn't matter if it's a squire played through a 25watt combo, or something more pricey.

But yeah, relative prices today are lower than they've ever been. I think I paid something like $450 for my G&L when I bought it in 1983. According to Google, that's nearly $1200 today. A few months ago I bought a MiM J Bass for $699. It plays every bit as well as that G&L.

Just to give a point of reference, bought the Eden stuff from Bass Emporium. I played bergantino, genz genz and Aguilar. Of the four I liked Eden. I will say, now that I have more experience and am familiar with sound boards and how to set an amp, I would love to go to a place and try all those again. I bet I would be surprised by the 15 years of changes and maybe have a different decision, today.

I never realized I was among so many rich people here on Talk Bass.
it's not about money --- that's a 'have/have-not' thing. it's about playing --- some do, some don't. ;)

per the OP:
Yeah, we got a lot of boomer hobbyists with big collections here......But perfectly serviceable, good playing, looking and sounding instruments are within the reach of more people now than any time in my life.
Quality music gear is more affordable now than it has ever been.

I worked in the music retail world for 15 years. I left in 2016 and I've definitely seen the prices go up, just like everything, but especially cabinets. Its materials, technology, and shipping costs so I get it.

I'm not rich but I have a lot of good gear because I always went for quality over quantity. I have friends that are like "NO WAY I'D SPEND $2K ON A BASS" but have five $600 basses they might love, usually they are just chasing something and modifying it, spending more money in the process.

I always tell people if they have something cheap to get them through, save your money for a year until you can afford that "higher end" level of gear, whatever that may be for their particular needs.

Im with the OP on this one, stuff has gotten expensive ...it doesnt help that reverb upped their rates and people are adding that to the list price. Also for example, The boss gt10b was $500 brand new back in 2009, I see most listed used and in average condition for $600 bucks...makes no sense

Take your time and an ear to the ground. Over time I found a hartke HD 410 cab for a 100. Looked a bit scruffy and the cat peed on it. But some TLC and it is excellent. That's the one with the aluminium cones. GK mb500 for a couple of hundred. B stock with some scratches.

Guitars the same. You can rest assured to find a high end Ibanez with some decent milage for a steal now and then.
Or in my case a Warwick from the nineties. Costed less than I would spend on a used mim fender.

And you can always upgrade. Say an sr 370? Which has a proper chunck of wood for a body is the base for a great upgrade. You find those cheap. Pair of nordstrand and an artec pre amp? Rock solid.
I kid you not on those pre amps. I put one in a epiphone? Unbelievable how good it sounds. They just amplify and shape tone. With a couple of di marzio pups it already is amazing.
also got an old 15 inch Peavy cab. Dirt cheap. Sounds great. And much more.
Like that ray 24. At B stock? You may find one again for way less than any fender and it sounds and plays like a dream.
Or those first gen subs. Just learned this neat trick. You can order alnico magnets. Pull the pup, change the ceramic for an alnico and it will be even better. Those first gen sub rays were already way to good for the money.

Don't look at what the pros here are spending.
Take time and jump at those rare occasions that pop up.
Over a couple of years you have a great rig with some solid basses next to it.

I realize I haven't bought anything new since my Fender American Standard Jazz bass in 2006 or 2007 but things are so much now. Every 5 string I look at, new or used, is thousands or close to 2k.

Amplifiers? Bergantino is like buying a house. Others are no better, including Aguilar or ampeg. Traynor? I had to get up off the floor. I guess $500 for my Eden WT405 in 2005 may be comparable to today, but I don't know. I do know it's 16 pounds.

I see you guys with 10 amps, 20 basses and think, wow. Then someone will post a thinning the heard bass, that costs 3.5k.

I never realized I was among so many rich people here on Talk Bass.

I have two basses and two amps. If I thin the herd then I will have no herd.

Thanks for reading
Rich is relative. I spend decent money on basses and cycling stuff but here's the behind the scenes....

I go to a bar about 5 times a year. When I go, I have 1 beer. I purchase about two 6 packs per year for home. So my annual spending on drinking is about $50.
I go to a sit down restaurant about once every 4-8 weeks. I get fast food about once per month.
I've lived in the same 900sq ft townhouse for the last 15 years.
I cut my own hair with $20 clippers.
I drive an 11 year old elantra with a standard transmission.
I go to see a movie in theaters about once per year, if that.
I purchase a new video game about once every 15 months.
I run my errands on bicycle about 11 months out of the year.
I go on vacation on my bike, with a tent... for $0.
I go on coffee dates.... not dinner and movie dates. Dunkin and a hike in a local preserve is great.
I buy a new pair of shoes about once every 2 years and spend maybe $40-50 when I do.
I make my coffee at home in the morning.
I don't do gas station drinks like redbull or monster and I don't drink any soda or eat candy/treats so $50 in groceries is about 8+ days of living for me.
I purchased a power rack and weights 8 years ago so I don't belong to a gym.
I share/swap streaming services with immediate family so my total cost for those is $13/month.

That's why I have enough for basses and bicycles, because I don't make a lot of money so I choose to be cautious of the small expenses that add up. Many friends pay more for property tax, heating/cooling, electric, etc because they have homes larger than they need or use. They eat out constantly and have a decent bar/food tab every time they go out...which leads to the gym cost. Most of them drive cars that are more than they need as well.... which leads to more gas... and more insurance... and in some cases more repairs. They have every streaming service and cable package known to man and attend all sorts of sporting events where they eat and drink to their hearts content. Lets not even get into the divorce/kids situation either. Habits like that are what makes people with $100k/year wonder where their money went.
And it's usually the upkeep and cost of use that gets ya. My friend just bought another rifle for like $1000, which I didnt think was bad at all... but then after $20/hour at the range.... and the crazy cost of ammo... you realize that you'll dump $100 to spend an hour of enjoyment.
I'd much rather get spendy on my road/gravel bike and then ride to my hearts content at basically no cost :)
