Both Jaco & Manring are truley gifted players who took the stepping stones layed before them by countless other bassist, and took them to new hights! I think Manring himself would tell you without Jaco he might not have gotten as far as he has.....the same way Jaco gave props to Jermont, Cogbil etc.....this is not boxing! As for writing...it's weird to see people selling Jaco short on that!! I guess we will see in a few years, who has more " standards" in the fake books:D

This is very difficult, both are/were great players.
But to me Michael has something very romantic to it, listen to some of his stuf on "drastic measures".
I heard some mention that Manring lacks "soul", if you really listen to "drastic measures" you can hear that Michael is a very sensitive and beautifull humanbeing. I think I would rather have Manring as a friend then Jaco, I don't know but Jaco had something strange to him (genius isn't far away from being crazy). Maybe I'm totally wrong because I don't know both people personally.
But one thing is for sure, Michael would have been playing different when Jaco wouldn't have lived (we all would). But hey, then some would sound more like Stanley or like Rocco, who knows!

Well, aren't WE superior:rolleyes: . Last time I checked this was called TALK BASS and last time I checked thats what we were doing (Besides, this is the BG side. You're not allowed to have a "I'm superior" attitude over here :p ). If you would like to comment on the actual subject of this thread, GREAT. Otherwise keep your "superior intellect" to yourself.

Apples, or oranges......apples, or oranges....

how about peaches and nectarines? they both taste practically the same...only jaco had fuzz(that is the overdrive distortion fuzz he used alot ;)

Exactly. It's the music that they created that counts, not how or even what instruments they played.

that reminds me of something I read in a Jaco interview.
the interviewer asked what he does when he's composing
and jaco responded saying that he did practically anything, if there was a bass handy. he'd use the bass, a piano...he'd use the piano...etc. jaco then went on to talk about how its the final result that matters more than the instruments playing...or something along those lines :) forgive my foggy memory

It is really nice to see each of us expressing our feelings with grace and civility. It is wonderful to see the mutual respect. But, in all honesty who cares! Both Michael and Jaco added so much to all of us as players and musicians. Each has pushed the limits and redefined the bass in the era in which we live. I would respectfully submit that we celebrate the music and lives of each of these players without comparison.

Mike

this imo needs to be said again

I wonder why people here are moaning about the comparison of these two players... it seems like whoever posted this topic had an intensive discussion going here... Michael Manring is my choice. (all my respect to late Jaco, though) I think it's better to endorse someone who is live and well, and creating music... (Don't get this wrong, please...:) )

I saw Michael play a solo show last night, I have a hard time putting it in words but it was some of the most ridiculous stuff I've ever seen in my life.

I bet it wasn't his surname.

The real shame is that the last two posts make more sense than most of the others.

I like apples Newton and Manring. I'm right and you are wrong unless your name is Bruce Lindfield.

I'm thinking.... shouldn't we really be worrying about ourselves rather than who is better between jaco and mm? I really believe we spend way too much time putting some of these people on pedestals when truthfully I like my playing better than I like either of theirs...Just a thought..They are and were ..just people...

you make a very good point about that, and Ive closed many threads about XXX vs. XXX now its time to put this one to bed too as they never really have anything valuable to offer.
