Many Just Don't Get IT, Gibson Thunderbird

Could you tell me something on the neck in t-birds? Like string spacing at the nut and the bridge, neck thickness, etc. I'd like to compare it with my main bass to see if it would be manually hard for me to swap these two basses.

The measurements are pretty much the same as a jazz bass in terms of nut width, bridge spacing and scale length. That said, I would really advocate trying one before buying one as they do hang/sit differently than a Fender. Not the ergonomic nightmare some describe in my personal experience but not everyone is the same... Perhaps one of the Warsaw music stores is a Gibson dealer and would have one? Or give me a shout if you're in the area. I've only seen one band with a Firebird guitar here so they seem pretty exotic locally. To me, the main thing is those 60s pickups so the Lulls are very attractive in my view. A sometimes cheaper option are the Orville tbirds that can sometimes be had from Japanese dealers/ebay, etc. The pickups are different but I still really like them. Cosmetically, I just like the look with the chrome better, too. Much like how the MGs and other British sports cars never looked quite 'right' after they went to the black rubber bumpers....

That part on movies, Maltese crosses etc. has been very much exhilarating ;)

The sense of that history is a little less abstract in this part of the world....

Do you have any photo in Soviet uniform, David?

but of course... going way OT (I have a talent for that...)

As a person living in Poland, David, you know it is a little bit hopeless to get "exotic" gear here. I might be the first person in Poland using GK MB Fusion/MBE410 for example... If I had money on the budget, I might ask Lauda-Audio to get me a tbird; they would like to know, however, that I'd be almost decided to buy.
Interesting person is Hubert Rowinski of HR Guitars in Warsaw. His specialty is importing and refurbishing vintage Japanese gear. He used to have some Orvilles, mostly electric guitars. His Web page is http://www.hrguitars.pl/
Hubert used to have some really nice stuff like this:

Aria Pro II TBS-400 (right), now owned by a beautiful blonde grindcore bassist-girl in Warsaw
or

1979 Pearl Export Custom (mine).

I think Hubert could dig some Orville t-bird there in Japan, but he is interested in some business like everybody else.

So I think I could go sometimes to your area or... to Berlin or London ;)

Although the Polish are well aware of the history, the fact that after 66 years we actually can laugh at Maltese crosses means a big change towards normality. I do not however smile seeing young people wearing, e.g., Che Guevara t-shirts. Or ones who as short as 22 years after the fall of Communism begin praising extreme leftist values. I could show here a picture of a dollar note presenting catastrophic view of New York combined with pictures of oil rigs and oil flowing like it were blood. Nothing funny in that, and people have so short memory...

Anyway, the first picture in Soviet uniform is just amazing! Proper blue eyes (pure Russian are Viking types not to use the word Aryan ;)) The second one is wrong! What are you smiling at?! Wrong! A proper Communist never smiles! ;) And what's that Schmeisser in your hand? It should be a "pepesha" if you were a private, and an officer should sport a Tokarev pistol! ;)))))

This is how a genuine Communist ensign looked like in 1980's (*I*). Are you scared? ;)

A chemical troops ranger

Ending this nice OT, see this actor:

If you know his name, you know my real last name, but my first name is Stefan, not Stanislaw. No family relationship ;)

It was on a break :) And I did have a Tokarev :D The Schmeisser was 'borrowed' from my neighbor. And there were plenty of pepeshas to go around (these were all authentic WWII issue on this film BTW - not 'dummies')

Ah, yes, Kapitan Kloss. Rather different from Hogan's Heros.

Sure you had plenty of the authentic weapon in your hands! If you go by my area, I will take you to the Motor Car Museum in Otrebusy. There is an authentic T-34 tank and... an authentic Tiger tank, one of very few left in the world. These are often rented out for movie purposes. The stuff they have is just amazing, they even have the authentic "papamobile" (custom truck used by Pope John Paul II on his visit in Poland in 1979).

There's a real Tiger there? That's very good to know - we could possibly use that on a project coming up.... I know of quite a few T-34s and other vehicles but no working Tigers or Panthers. Now totally off topic....

David, I had no idea the breadth of your talent! Very cool stuff! I'm impressed.

Thats cool... great resume! Great influences too! Outstanding taste indeed!

I am playing Entwistle in the Broadway Production of Tommy... (well the bass player)... at University of California Davis two months hence. With the rest of the Who Tribute band I am in.

JAE was a big influence on me if only I could keep still. Heads Hiwatt DR201, 100w Bass, Hiwatt 2150, 4123. Bass '67 Thunderbird.

Funny thing is I was always a very busy bassist (where it made sense) and so got in the habit much like John of standing like a telephone pole. Its pretty natural for me although I always used to play on stage left in other bands so I didn't whack somebody in the head with my bass, so playing stage right these days... well there have been collisions.

'91 Thunderbird?...Pffft...The only real Thunderbirds are from the '60s. Too bad you just don't get it.

;):hiding:

While I certainly appreciate the '60s Birds, before I bought mine (a new one, back in '91), I played a bunch of older Thunderbirds, and I have to say, I was really impressed by the '91. I'm not sure if mine has the single-coil pickups or not (I'll have to pull the pickups sometime and check that out), but it has a very thin neck (narrower and thinner than any of my J-basses) with an ebony board, and it has a lot of high end clarity, but still that beefy T-bird punch. I've played a number of Thunderbirds made since '91, and the more recent ones (with thicker necks and rosewood boards) don't hold a candle to my '91, IME/IMHO. YMMV, of course.

Although I don't play it as much lately (since I am usually gigging out with basses I am reviewing for the mag), I gigged my T-bird hard for 10+ years, and I have more gigs on it than any other bass I own, by far. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

I bought a new Thunderbird IV last June or so . I have other basses (Fenders etc. ) but this one is a true killer. It is a different bass to play and took me a while to get used to it. However when I began to make recording with it (solo stuff) I was amazed at the sound it puts out without any pedals or gizmo's.......It is "too-loud" or "too much Bass".....I'll take it , too much $$$, no way !!!
