Marijuana Reform. (an interesting article.)

Also, I agree we should be researching it more for both it's negative and positive effects. I've also heard that there's a connection between cannabis and cancer prevention, amongst other medicinal benefits. Is this true?

Not prevention that I'm aware of; however, it can help with several of the problems caused by chemotherapy such as appetite loss.

Thank you for digging that up. I think I'm confusing physical and psychological addictions (I'm obviously not well educated with addictions and/or dependancies). Do you know what percentage of users are addicted or dependant? I've also heard that no one in history has died from ingesting too much pot. Is that correct? Thanks again.

Not a problem.

Sorry, I can't help you there because I haven't a clue as to what the actual percentages are. I'd have to dig up a research paper I did on Marijuana to find some stats on that.

As for Marijuana related overdoses I've only ever found one piece of information that actually listed any deaths from it.

[This invalid link has been removed] It's #4 on the list.

4. "Tetrahydrocannabinol is a very safe drug. Laboratory animals (rats, mice, dogs, monkeys) can tolerate doses of up to 1,000 mg/kg (milligrams per kilogram). This would be equivalent to a 70 kg person swallowing 70 grams of the drug -- about 5,000 times more than is required to produce a high. Despite the widespread illicit use of cannabis there are very few if any instances of people dying from an overdose. In Britain, official government statistics listed five deaths from cannabis in the period 1993-1995 but on closer examination these proved to have been deaths due to inhalation of vomit that could not be directly attributed to cannabis (House of Lords Report, 1998). By comparison with other commonly used recreational drugs these statistics are impressive."

Other than this one article, the worst I've ever heard from someone ingesting too much pot is toxic psychosis and from what I've learned it's a very temporary and rare condition.

I have no data to back this up but I'm leaning towards no. It burns hotter and contains more tar than cigarettes, and though I'm for its decriminalization, putting any kind of smoke in your lungs isn't exactly a good way to stave off cancer. That being said, I believe the risk of cancer for someone that only smokes pot is still greatly reduced because, the average pot smoker isn't smoking nearly as much weed as a smoker would with a pack of cigarettes in a day.

And so you use a vaporizer or get edibles. There so many ways to ingest weed without ruining your lungs.

I've had multiple family members DIE from the use of alcohol and cigarettes and I personally know (or have known) doctors, police officers, artists, prominent business owners, politicians, licensed professionals, etc who smoke pot regularly. Anecdotal evidence isn't very useful in these sorts of conversations.

If you read my post, I did point out that it was just personal observations and I did point out that in that case, I thought it was more down to the type of person as opposed to the drug. :)

Most studies regarding marijuana as a treatment seemed promising, but fail to deliver in actual practice. Subsequently, most of the results of these studies were later refuted in other studies published later.

Dronabinol has shown to be ineffective at pain control and treating nausea and mildly effective with appetite stimulation. I suppose the only reason it's still on the market is because the only other appetite stimulant still on the market has such nasty side effects that it is simply safer to try dronabinol even though it doesn't work very well.

how healthy is strapping a couple 1x2's on your feet and skiing down an avalanche,or getting hit by a 300 pound linebacker......jumping out of airplanes, running the bulls in pamplona, and even trips to the corner mcdonalds can pose health risks.....yet it's often the same anti smoking crowd that will play very risky games....i'm not sure how should we or who should determine what behaviors are or are not acceptable in a free society, when it comes to ones own person....

The main issue I have with any form of smoking, legal or illegal is the potential harm to those in your surroundings.

Quite similar to throwing someone you know infront of a charging 300lb linebacker when they didnt want to be there :p

here smoking is banned from all public places......they are actually trying to include your car as a public place, and for searches, hooker busts etc they have succeeded......i can't say i miss the smoke in a restaurant or club, tho' i was a smoker once, but i see no problem in ones own space

personally i feel that the illegality of dope causes far more death and grievous injury than if we were to simply let others get high.....after all the herculean efforts of decades of fighting drugs, even the cops admit they only catch about 10%

Ya see, this is why most of these debates are lame sauce. If the selling point is, "oh yeah, these other legal things are also bad" it's not a good defense. I'm fairly neutral on this subject matter, but most of the offerings are pretty weak.

If weed is legalized, they'll quickly find something else. You don't think they're already thinking about this?

That's how it is here, which I'm all for. Your own car as a public place tho? That's nonsense!

I think that many people would probably ditch their other 'lulling' prescription drugs with the widespread use of medical pot which could be a great thing in terms of people that can be physically dependent on them.
.

And that right there is why the FED's will never legalize it. The pharmaceutical companies are in cahoots with the politicians. I mean you saw the fight over health care reform. Watch what happens when these companies stand to loose billions because pot is legal.

Don't get me wrong I would love for it to be legal, but to many powerful people stand to loose to much money if it ever is and we all know that's not going to happen.

yes, in a few ways from what i know. i had an uncle die of cancer almost exactly 5 years ago this month, and they were thinking of perscribing him medical marijuana to get him to eat cause the cancer took his appetite away. so that's one way it apperently helps. honestly i'm not sure of the others cause i haven't looked into it, but i've seen people go as far as to say it is the cure for cancer. that's very debatable though if you ask me..

If it was made legal, taxed and regulated like alchohol, and priced similarly to current illegal prices, the black market would undoubtably continue.
It is simply too easy to grow and distribute for the government to fully regulate it. That may be one of the reasons it remains illegal in so many places.

Most bud in the US is grown locally. The black market doesnt have a big hand in MJ distribution. Most sellers obtain their stuff legally, but distribute illegally, to unlicensed people.

You don't see people getting robbed of their tomatoes, bell peppers, and lemons do you?

I steal peoples lemons.

As an ex habitual daily user of marijuana for 35 years I can honestly say that legalizing pot is the worst thing that can happen to our society. Zappa summed it up best when it said it makes people lazy and passive, exactly what some people who do not have the best interest in our country want. Be careful what you wish for!!

Legalizing pot will only make things easier for the people who already smoke. Sure, maybe more people will try it, but for some the illegality of it is its allure. Its not like people dont already smoke it anyways.

California seems to be taking the first step to move forward in all of this. I have heard on NPR that Oakland (which has many dispensaries) is really pushing forward whether it is prohibited by federal law or not.

I don't think that the country has progressed to a point that they are willing to run before crawling (meaning the US won't just legalize free use, but rather they will have to legalize for medical use only at first). They really have no plan for basis to sell, distribute, tax marijuana on a large scale yet.

I think even before legalization happens on a federal level we will see federal law that puts legalization into the hands of the state. From there the states will legalize and regulate as they see fit. At least I think that would be the best option.
