Marine Vs. HOA over a flagpole

Dude, its not absurd. Rules are rules remember? Everyone must obey them. Its probably only absurd to you because you dont like that the analogy is a valid point against yours for why it's okay to break the rules. Perhaps if you'd think outside the box and exert some critical thinking skills you'd actually see that. Either way, I'm done with this thread because we're never gonna agree on whose right and whose wrong. So lets both STFU and forget we both said anything.

There's a very distinct difference between disobeying a rule that discriminates people based on your skin color, something that you do not choose (Beyond tans, etc) and a rule that prevents some one from having a 20 foot flag pole in their front yard.

me too. it get's better and better everytime i watch it. I was however suprised the word showed up blanked out.
Oh, I'm sure they'll consider re-writing the rules... in the same way they always do.
Show up at the HOA meeting with enough association members that agree with you, and you'll have no problem voting to change the rules.
Can't get enough neighbors to agree? That's how HOA's work.
It's HIS system.
He CHOSE to sign the contract. He CHOSE to be a member of an HOA. He CHOSE to be bound by their rules. He CHOOSES to fund the HOA through dues.
He (and his neighbors) control those rules through a vote.
He's got no one to blame but himself.
Would you say the same thing if it was a rule against basketball hoops? Painting your house pink with polka dots?
They're all aesthetic restrictions. Why should the flag be treated differently?
No, in an HOA there is only one way to get the rules changed. Play nice with a bunch of your neighbors and get to them to vote with you to change the rules. Being non-compliant won't get you anywhere.
No - HE needs to show up at the HOA meeting ALONG with all those neighbors who don't mind. Then those neighbors who say they don't mind all need to VOTE showing they don't mind.
At that point, the rules will change.
This guy (and all his neighbors) ARE the HOA.
Remember - these rules were not imposed on this guy.
HE CHOSE TO LIVE UNDER THESE RULES.
He knew these rules existed, knew the HOA existed, had to sign a contract to be a member of the HOA... all choice.
A big difference between being held to rules of ones own choosing and those imposed by the government.
This is an excellent discussion. I'm actually surprised in a good way. I thought because he was a marine and it was about the flag, everyone would just ignore the fact that he was breaking the rules.
Some have ignored it. Even worse, they also ignore the fact these are rules he agreed to when he moved into the community.
This is the most logical and appropriate post in the thread - other than the ones I've contributed saying similar things.

wasn't this same story a big deal about a year ago? anyway, i don't like how either party has behaved. as for the Marine, he put up the pole after asking them to and being denied.
"i'm not allowed to do it, but i'm going to do it anyway"
i also don't like the reasons (or lack thereof) that the HOA is saying that they won't allow the pole or even consider changing the rules slightly (like say a 10ft pole) considering the pole doesn't bother any neighbors.
"i want everyone to do what i say and i won't change my views for anyone"
it feels like watching 2 children argue about who is right.
on a side note, i hate HOAs. i believe that if i'm making the payments (or have already paid in full) on my property, i'll do whatever i d@$% well please as long as it doesn't break the law.
