Mark Hoppus - Blink 182

I don't know what it is but I like me some Blink 182. Maybe it's the simplicity of what they do and the fact that they continue to crank out cool catchy songs. I mean none of them are that great, well maybe Travis is extra good but they make cool fun music.
Mark plays nice bass lines.
OK I said my bit.

I think to a non musician, good bass playing is represented by good bass tone. When I was in the car with a friend, Twilight Zone by Golden Earring came on, and the "bass solo" came up. And he was like, "WHOA, Hey do you think you could play that?!" And I was like, "Uh... that's three notes over and over again."

But it's great tone! And very audible. Not to call fans of Hoppus to be non musicians. :D

? No actually, I've been a huge Mark Hoppus fan ever since I saw the "All the Small things" music video. From there I went back and checked out all of their material. His playing really is some of the best I've ever heard.

I could not agree more. He has the most dynamic and complex bass patterns. And he always dazzles me with his fast runs. A virtuoso all the way.

Could someone just tell me his 'classic lines' apart from carousel?

It's not real use denying that he has no talent, he's said it himself that he sucks at playing bass, yet he's making millions of dollars.
I'm not sure that he has many! :) But the song 'Cacophony' is okay for bass, from what I remember of it. I think if you're looking for 'classic' punk basslines, Mike Dirnt has more.

I don't see why people are so down on Mark Hoppus... he's doing a fine job of making simple music that appeals mostly to younger kids. He's no Jaco or Vic Wooten, and he's not even as diverse as Matt Freeman or Mike Dirnt within his genre, but why is this a problem? His music doesn't call for virtuous playing, his playing is in tune and in time, and his tone is decent. Maybe I have low standards, but that's all I ask for in bass playing. And it's probably true that someone who knows nothing about bass would look at his playing and incorrectly assume that playing bass is inherently easy, but that's their mistake. I don't see why people aren't content to let others enjoy their music in their own way without expecting them to be the next Jaco/Neil Peart/Steve Vai.

mark hoppus said himself that if there was another guitar player in the band he would play fills and walk around the neck a bit more and he sees himself of a rhythm player insted of a lead player, it was in some interview i read.

i dont really like Mark That much, albeit he can hold down some nice lines.

Matt I liked what you said about people not liking what isnt flashy, I totally aree however, when faced with opportunity to go see Geddy Lee in bass workshop or Mark hoppus, who would you choose. Or any other? If it was was between Mark and wooten? Or pattacuci? Or Sheehan? Or King? Or Bootsy?

Long story short, we as bassists can never fully respect Mark as a bassist, because we have sampled better. If you taste a normal un flavoured cracker, then taste the most delicious cracker ever, whoch would you go back to? This is why Kids think Mark is the bomb, its because more often than not, they wont experience what we, the bassists of the world, have.

Marlboro Man, Fentoozler, Reebok Commercial, Cacophony,
Romeo and Rebecca, Carousel, Enthused, Emo, A New Hope,
Josie, Degenerate, Don't Leave Me, Anthem, Mutt,
The Party Song, Dysentary Gary, Story Of A Lonely Guy,
Rock Show, Please Take Me Home, Stay Together,
Not Now, Here's Your Letter, All Of This , East Target,
Always, Asthenia, Stockholm Syndrome, I Miss You,
Feeling This, My Pet Sally, Man Overboard etc. all have really good basslines. None of them are really hard, but they arewhile jumping around and Blink always play fastre live on every song.

Most of you think he has no talent. But he writes great songs
and plays them perfectly live.
