errr... then maybe he shouldn't jump around as much? That's like taking all your strings of and then tapping on the pickup to keep a beat then saying "Well he's really good, have you ever tried to play a no string bass!?!?" When you make something harder on yourself, it doesn't make up for a lack of skill :P


Also, just because it's fast doesn't mean it's skillful.

So your saying if i write a catchy song that's 3 alternating frets on 1 string and play it perfectly while jumping up and down and screaming at the top of my lungs i'll be as good as mark hoppus? :hyper: :D

that's just my $0.02 man, listen to whatever you want, but in my opinion flea and claypool will always be the kings of bass

Wow this thread is still going? Ok,I think I can offer a different perspective on this besides either bashing Mark or worshiping him. I used to play in a few different bands with Travis Barker among them FEEBLE which started in 1995 and was along the same lines as Blink but mabye with more of a Descendents/All type sound.I played a P-Bass with a pick and alot of the songs were superfast(think NOFX).First of all Travis's playing is so busy it's hard to fit a lot of things in without the bottom dropping out.Second ,I didn't do much singing so it was a little easier for me to throw things in.If you want to hear what I played in this context, check out my website Link Removed . I put a Feeble song up there for now so you guys could check it out.Keep in mind this was recorded in 1996(2 inch tape,no pro tools,no auto-tune).Lastly,Travis himself has told me that Mark is primarily a songwriter.He's not trying to be some great bass player and I don't think he cares.That being said,I do think Mark could spice things up a little by going up an octave,doing fills and mabye walking a little.Bottom line though is that it's his band and he can play what he wants.Personally my favorite bass players for this type of music are Karl Alvarez(Descendents/All),Bob Thompson(Big Drill Car),Matt Riddle(Face to Face,No Use For A Name) and Jesse from Lagwagon.You youngsters should check them out if you haven't already.BTW i've met Mark a few times and he's a really nice guy so go easy on him. :D

I have nothing against him and B182. They are not my cup of tea, but I thought they made some clever videos. In their defense, they have alot of energy and write very "catchy" songs that people like. It's no different why Motley Crue are more popular with the masses then Iron Maiden or Judas Priest. Is it any worse to be such a snob that you only like Jaco, Wooten, etc. and say all non-virtuoso's suck? Nothing to be ashamed of, and no reason to slag on them.

However, I do have two reasons to slag on them:
1. The pink jazz bass with a p pickup looks so wrong to me.
2. That "Meet the Barkers" show is the most pathetic boring ripoff of the Osbournes anyone could have ever dreamed up! I can't fathom anyone outside of the most hardcore B182 fans wanting to watch that pile of crap. It even sucks by MTV programming standards!

Dude, the kid said that Mark was his favorite bassist, doesnt mean it has to be the best bassist, jeez, quit trying to put him down just because he doesnt like jaco, or anyone like that, like im sure there are people on talkbass that can play bass better than Mark from blink 182, and bunch of other bands, but no one care's, like who cares who is the fastest downstroaker, at least mark is decent at it thats all that matters, if bands thought the way that some of you do then bands would say DUUUDE mark you suck, i wish we had jaco pastorius in are band, and metallica could say the same thing, truth is the bass player doesnt have to be a master for lots of genres.

Yeah, Really. I started playing with Travis around 1991-92.We played in about 4 different projects together the last being FEEBLE which he left in early 97 to join The Aquabats and then went on to Blink in 98.Travis is actually the one who recruited me to play bass(I used to play the geetar)and taught me alot about music as well.If you don't believe me check out the FEEBLE song on my website, Travis is playing the drums on that track......

i totally agree.

and also people who like mark like mark the showman and musician and i agree.i dont care how good a bass player is if he isnt fun to watch he isnt fun to watch.

People can say he writes catchy basslines and it fits the music and whatever. Mark is not a bassist, he is a teen sensation. Blink 182 has been sucessfully marketed towards 14 year olds and the MTV generation.

I agree that it doesn't have to be complex to be good, but he plays nothing original or interesting. Any average bass player could do what he does. For me personally I get bored with bass players who sound exactly the same as about 10,000 others. I too am amazed so many kids these days are inspired by him. Most of these kids probably wouldn't even know what to think if they heard or saw someone like Wooten or Geddy jam it out.

With all that being said, if Blink 182 is really your thing, then to each their own.

I almost guarentee Mark is showing the utmost in restraint. He doesn't play flashy because John Q. Idiot doesn't want to hear flashy anything. I'm not saying Blink fan's are idiot, I'm saying the MTV gang doesn't want to hear music. Frankly, they'd be just as happy to hear drums/vocals... I don't know, the drums might not be needed. Basically moving basslines create polyphony, which is too much for some. Blink is for people who hate classical music (generalizing)

I still feel that modern punk pop is almost like the downfall of music. Once it dies out and people realize there's no good musicianship held within maybe a new generation will get some sense knocked into them.

"It's simple and catchy" Who cares? Some Geddy Lee lines are fairly simple (see Red Barchetta) yet AMAZING still. I mean, he only needs a 2 string bass (maybe even one) and whoever is inspired by this guy and plays his stuff hasn't much hope. I mean, you try to emulate your idols, but if your idol is talentless, then what's the point?

Yes he jumps around. Yes he sings. No he does not play good music. Bottom line.

Maybe the only reason mark still plays bass is because he gets paid to do so....And thats why his lines are almost always minimalistic....I just don't know how you could go so long without wanting to bust it out just a little...I know, we are here to hold the pocket..but come on..Just a little taste?

either way, it kicks ass that he has his own signature bass guitar...That would rule!!!

it's unfortunate actually, there are so many more deserving bassists instead of him and he gets one. A guy who doesn't even play his instrument with skill
