Mark Hoppus Tones.

Alright, I also LOVE marks sound, but i also likea unique sound. But here's what i set my amp and bass at-

My bass(Std jazz)-
-Neck pickup Vol- 10
-Bridge pickup vol- 6
-Tone- Cranked at 10
-Ernie Ball Regular Slinkies
-Attack between both pickups
-Jim Dunlop .60mm Picks(orange)

Amp Settings-
-EQ- High lows, Scoopes/medium Mids, medium highs
-Bass Knob- about 7
-Treb knob- about 5
-5 Way knob- Selection 3
-Ultra High Boost- off
-Low boost- on

THis setting gives me a nice sound, if i turn off my bridge pickup then it sounds as much as you can sound like mark with a jazz pick up. So i hope this helps. New strings will always give the best p-bass sound. :) Later.

Well, this doesn't seem to really be about Hoppus' rig, so it's getting moved. Now, I'm notoriously bad at moving threads to the right forum, so I've sent it along to Miscellaneous - if you think I'm wrong Will (and it won't be the first time I am...), move it back.

Yeah, I don't really play punk, so I might not know what I'm talking about. I just thought the steel souded like Mike Dirnt. I don't know what he uses, most players do use nickle though, so maybe my ears are just strange.
I use nickle too, but thats cause its not for punk.

heheh well for the people who want to know exactly what i have and how i achived the sound read below.

ok well first off i dont use ampeg or fender or even top of the range strings so that is a big relife to know i can get the sound i wanted with yuck gear

anyway

+Amp Gear
.Peavey TNT 115 (OLD Version of it with the yucky
scorpian speakers.)
.Crossover network
.small leads
.Tuner

+Amp setup
.Pre Volume: Howeva u want it
.Post Volume: Same as above
.Bright switch: On
.Punch swtich: if you want it on or not. it dont
effect the sound at all
.Lows knob: on 3
.EQ settings as followed:
4.0: 0
8.0: -5
160: -15
340: -5
660: +10
1.3k:+10
2.6k: +10
5k: +10
10k: -15
.Highs knob: 6
-Crossover network setup
.Frequency: half way betwen 8 and 1.4k
.1 lead from Low output into the PWR. AMP In jack.
.1 lead from the High output into the In jack on my
tuner. this is optional but who knows what u cand
do
-Chrous setup
.All the chorus is off but it does supply abit of that
mark hoppus tone if your strings are getting old.
just turn chorus on and turn both knobs down to 0

+Bass Gear
-Bass: Black "Prince" P bass with an unknown brand
single coil, single pickup (i was kidding bout
cheap was i)
-Strings: God only knows what brand but all i did
was wash the strings as explained below.
They are steel strings.

+Bass setup
-Volume settings: Full
-Tone settings: Full
-Bass plugged into the Low input on the amp. My
Bass is passive but for some reason i get a better
sound in the low input of the amp.

+Picks
-I use .60 dunlop tortex (orange)

+String washing instructions
Step 1: Hot water goes into a sink then I put laundry powerder into the sink along with the product called CLR it is a cleanig agent and prevents rush and gets grot and stuff off real easy
Step 2: let the strings soak in the sink for about 5mins then i attack them with a clean cloth and rub them down 1 by 1 drying them off as i go.
Step 3: Boil sum plain water then chuck the strings in for bout 30mins then take them out and dry them down real good and proper.
Step 4: let them sit and have a rest for about 2hrs (eg, this is me just being lazy and not restringing)
Step 5: restring and tune.

Plug in ya setup amp and off you go. Ill do a recording and let use listen if you wish. Another thing to keep in mind to about the cleaning on strings
the strings i used where the original strings that came with my bass so that made them about 4 years old b4 i touched them the other day
they have lasted about a week with the sound and the sound has yet to fade out of the new sounding sector. so thats all good.

but apart from that its all in the strings
i have just proven that mark hoppus can run of cruddy basses and have the same sound!.

now do i get the prize for most detailed and longest post? or do i have to keep trying?
ehe

anyway hope this helped guys

Heres what I know:

*He uses nickel ernie ball strings, 45-105 gauge (hybrid slinky)

*he uses 2 Ampeg SVT-4 PRO heads live. I saw his live rig in On Stage magazine. One head is split into 2 8x10 cabs, and the other one is bridged into the third 8x10. he has a mesa/boogie high gain amp switcher to switch between the 2 SVT-4 PRO heads. (I dont know why) He DID use a Mesa/Boogie Bass 400+ back in the Dude Ranch days. He doesnt anymore though, my guess would be that it has something to do with the Ampeg endorsement.

*I think he has a lot of tube gain in his tone, because it has sort of a dirty sound. But maybe thats just the strings slapping against the frets...

*His tone sounds scooped, like there are no mids in it. Maybe some low mids, but I cant hear any high mids. This might be my immagination though.

*New strings are definatelly important. I can bear an uncanny resemblance with new EB strings and my 12 watt Crate set right and my tone knob on my bass up full.

his tone bugs me, too. I've come closest by using the Ampeg SVT Preset on the ZOOM B2 and playing my 6er agressively with a pick over the neck pup. the 6er is active and the bass n treble is on full and the pup blend is set more to the neck.

the Peavey i can't get to sound anything like hardly at all.
