But why "play comparison"? It's not a competition. Hoppus plays what's right for his band's songs, which does not include slapping, tapping, or fast runs up the neck. So what? I've seen Blink 182 live, and they were tight as hell and kicked ass. And when a band is tight, that means the bass player is doing his job. So it's not flashy.. but again, who cares? Hoppus might well be able to solo his ass off for all we know, but in the situation he's in, that's beside the point. It's called sublimating your ego and anchoring the band.
You mention Mike Watt, who is my absolute favorite bass player of all time. He plays a totally different role than Mark Hoppus. Watt leads the band from the bass chair. Can you imagine Hoppus trying to inject Watt-style stuff into Blink's songs? It wouldn't work. Hoppus does what is right for his band's songs, and that's really all that matters.

Alright, good point. You're right, its important to have a tight section, and despite one's technical skills if you do that you do your job.
Still a lot of people make a big deal out of his ability to sing and play at the same. Its not easy to play fast, its harder to play slow and it is definately hard to sing. But they're not extremely difficult things to obtain, if someone can do them, good for them. It still doesn't make them a god or an idol. Then it just comes down to whether you like the music or not. You can like Hoppus, or you can like that guy from Eve 6, they both have a lot in common.
I don't care for Blink's music, it doesn't interest me. I can listen to NOFX, Bouncing Souls tons of other bands that appeal to me more.

Also, Hoppus does his job and pretty, and he gets points for that. But what about Tony Lombardo? Or Dee Dee Ramone? Klaus Flouride? These guys all did their jobs well in their bands, and to me they have much more significance than Blink 182. I don't see why Mark should get kudos for something like that when these guys barely get a murmur.

Just how I see it.

Hey man, you're preachin' to the choir. Besides Tony Lombardo, what about Karl Alvarez, or Bob Thompson, or Jesse Buglione? There are a lot of unsung players in the genre. I wasn't defending the fact that Hoppus gets more press than those guys. That's bound to happen when your band gets as big as Blink 182, and you get your own signature bass from Fender. We agree he does his job well.. that's all I was saying. But damn straight, there oughta be a Fender Karl Alvarez signature Jazz bass!

I didn't read every single post in this thread, and I don't like Blink 182. But a bassist should not be hated because of his ability. For instance, say suck and you're awesome. Are you gonna hate me for it? I think it's kinda dumb he has a signature bass but I think Blink had their instruments first custom made then Fender thought they could make alot of money because Blink 182 is so popular. That's just a guess. Although I haven't heard many of their songs the ones I have heard by MXPX their bass riffs are just as simple. So you might as well hate their bass player too. There's probably MANY MANY more that do just as much as Hoppus does but aren't hated for it.

Blink 182 is music for 12 year old girls :D

In all seriousness though, who cares. I personally don't like Blink but that's irrelevant to many that do like them. So i think their music sucks...that's not to say that Johnny down the street loves them and thinks the "Old White Guy" music I like sucks. Kinda funny to call Classic Rock, Jazz, Reggae and Funk "Old White Guy" music. Kinda funny since I'm only 20 and only 1/4 White.
The point is people shouldn't hate Hoppus...hell the guy made it big and is basically reveling in his success, can't blame him for that. Anyone else in his place would probably do the same.

Also why do all these bands made for teenagers have numbers at the end of their names? That one still escapes me. Maybe I've become the old man in the middle of the street who hates the darn kids and their music. Ha!

Another thing that pisses me off - the ticket prices! Last time I checked how much was a Fugazi ticket? That’s Punk Rock! Blink is out to make money now.

I also do not like the fact that they are described as Punk. I have never seen so many damn Quincy Punks in my life! They adopt the punk dress but not the philosophy. How would you Jazz nuts feel if N'sync was lumped into your genre? It essentially doesn’t effect you, but would you not feel insulted?

I love punk rock, It’s been my life for almost seven years. I feel that it’s just a huge insult to a specific culture. I’m proud of punk, I love going to local shows and even shows at large venues and seeing the same faces and knowing that it’s MY family. I can count on people there to keep things cool and look out for each other. Things get heated but the same guy that was just gunna punch you in the face might borrow you 10 bux the next minute for a CD.

I'm not trying to proove that I'm right. I'm asking why others try to proove that they're right.

N*Sync and Backstreet Boys are for the 12 year old girls. Blink182 is WAY to innapropriate for 12 year olds. All talk of sex, masturbation, incest, and the F word everywhere. The best parts ;)

Even the riffs are simple, he can hold a groove and the pulse of a song like something else. He does what's needed and asked of him. And he does it well. You all can respect him for that.

Another thing that annoys me is that, of all the hybrid designs they could have chosen, they decided on just a P-Bass pup with a J-body and neck. I mean, that's just a fancy looking P-bass. I wish Fender would stop trying to cash in on big names and start some product research. I mean, What about the 2 P-Bass pups in a j body???? I saw a bass like that on Bunny Bass and have been hoping and praying to get one ever since. Still...prolly not gonna happen anytime soon.

Firstly, stop saying Blink 182 have sold out. Until i hear one of them say "we dont like this music, we're not proud of it, we just do it to make money" i wont believe they have sold out. So what if Blinks music is a little stale. JUst cos their style has changed doesnt mean they have sold out. Surely selling out means you forget what you want to make and just make something you know people will buy.

I agree, i dont think Hoppus went to Fender and said "please please please please please give me a sig. bass. i NEED one", it's clearly Fender cashing in on the name.

Blink 182 have worked hard for a long time and are making money, stop being sour. So they have and are making money, they earnt it, stop bitching about it. It's NOT thier fault the Fugazi and Rancid are burning up the charts and getting number one singles. It just happens the "pop" music is "popular".

Plus, they arent going round saying "hahahahahahaahahaa look at all my money losers, hahaha" and wiping their asses with $100 bills.

They probably built it that way because that's what he asked for. I played one at Guitar Center, and it absolutely killed. I wanted to walk out of the store with it.

I don't hate Hoppus, I hate Blink 182. There music does nothing for me. I hate his voice, I hate the lyrics, I hate the music. It doesn't have to be complicated to be good, but if it sounds like someone grating their nails across a chalkboard, I'm not gonna like it, no matter how good someone else says they are.

Personally, I think Hoppus got a sig bass because he was able to popularize extreme colors. I think the basses are ugly as sin, but thats my opinion. I don't like the bass, but I at least played one. It sounds just like any other bass with a S-D 1/4 pound in it. I don't like the jazz bass body style, I don't like the color, I don't like the white pearl p/g, I don't like the lack of a tone knob....

I think i'm a better bassist than Hoppus, but that really doesn't take much. I'm not jealous of him because I don't want or plan on getting rich in a rock band. He has nothing I want, so there is no reaon to be jealous of him.

It all boils down to the fact I'd rather chew broken glass and bathe in razor blades than listen to Blink 182.

blink is awesome and i am going to see them in a week.

why do bassist bash him? he has fun and loves what he does, and isnt that what it is all about, isnt that everything is about in life? and no bashiing travis, he is very very talented, and he plays jazz, rnb, rock, everyhting not just punk, so he should get credit for being a great musician and having super chops

and stop bashing there music, who cares if u dont like it, i dont like the who, but i am not going to go around saying the who sucks. as a musician i give them respect for loving what they do and having fun.

musicians should not bash musicians, we are all the same no matter what you say, we all share a passion for music and love music, maybe different genres and differnt artsit but it is still music

in your opinion, Blink is awesome. In my opinio, they sound like nails on a chalkboard.

I didn't bash him. And I'm entitled to my opinion, just like you. The reasons bassists bash him have been listed not only in this thread, but all the other hundreds of Hoppus threads. Are all those reasons justified? No, but not all of those reasons are unjustified.

...and no bashiing travis, he is very very talented, and he plays jazz, rnb, rock, everyhting not just punk, so he should get credit for being a great musician and having super chops

I didn't see anyone bash Travis.

Like I said before, I'm entitled to my opinion, and I will bash whatever I want. I never did bash their music, I stated my opinion. My opinion is that they suck. Your opinion is that they are awesome. I disagree with you, but I still respect your opinion. Why don't you try showing your fellow board mates the same respect? The day I'm no longer allowed to state my opinion is the day I stop posting on TalkBass.

Musicians bash music day in and day out. Punks bash on Boy Bands, Metalheads bash on Pop, Pop bashes on punk and metal, and on and on.

So, we are the same, but different? How can that be? I'm not the same, I'm unique, just like everyone else. ;)

they don't adopt the punk dress. since when are baggy shorts punk? that's like 90's skate fashion.

So, Youve been to my school? Hmm...next time you are in WI ring me up, well jam.

If its stale than...why should I like it? Than have changed for the worse IN MY OPINION. You simply cannot tell me Im wrong. Its my opinion. I have no beef with you, you can like Blink. Why do you care if a certain percentage of people dislike Blink? I dont recall the thread asking "Why do people like Blink?"

Blink 182 have worked hard for a long time and are making money, stop being sour. So they have and are making money, they earnt it, stop bitching about it.

Untill I hear a member of a band say "We work really hard, We have earned this money" I wont believe it. See, that sounds silly. :D

You think that Blink isnt rubbing the money they make in peoples faces? I recall a video where they are THROWING the money! Out of cars, on the streets. Yeah, they were given the money to make a video but none the less, they are rubbing it in everyones face.

You are right however, everyone does need to calm down. You and myself included. Mods please leave this up. Things will stay cool..I hope.

:Edit: Also, to clarify, I used to like Blink. They were never my favorite band but I recall many a time when I would pop in a Blink CD. This ended some time ago however.

I went through that phase too. Once Enema came out though it just went down hill from there.
