The fact that it is fine with the passive basses proves the amp is okay. For some reason the stingray output is way hotter. The ray is the issue IMO.

I don't think any of Markbass' heads have a padded input. I have never had an issue with my SD800 clipping with my Ray and I run my gain over 50%. I have no experience with the head in question though.
To me a padded input or input with a pad switch is redundant on an amp that has a potentiometer to feed the front end. That knob is the 'pad' and it has more variability than a switch or a -whatever input.
A near death battery can cause a distorted signal, simulating a nasty clipping noise..I definitely try this but the bass's preamp actually gets hotter with a dying battery? Seems counterintuitive to me but I'm not real experienced with active electronics so maybe there's more to the story. But, batteries are cheap so try it I will.
