"Married" to the same bass for almost 50 years

I married young...a brand new Ric 4001 in 1980, when I was 16. I'm totally faithful, but I do fool around with my other 6 pretty regularly.

I bought a new BC Rich, Eagle bass with twin humbuckers from Leo Quan Music in Oakland in 1977 when I was 25. I sold it few years ago for a lighter weight short scale. So much for sentiment. But I'm still rocking.

A friend of mine has the 59P his father bought brand new and then passed down to him around 1970. It is the best playing P I have ever had in my hands with my 76 coming in a close second. I have had mine since 1984.

I have a '76 Gibson Thunderbird that I've had 35 years - I bought it new. The one in my avatar. Can't say I'm married to it, since I have 25 other basses and don't play it that much anymore. It was my main player for 20 years, but is retired now.

I just bought a Carvin Icon 6 that I'm pretty sure I'll own the rest of my life. I don't think I've ever loved a bass so much right off the bat. I may be "married" to it for a long time.

Who am I kidding. I'm not the marrying kind.

When I was 15, my father bought the first bass I ever owned. A mid 70's P-bass that was heavy as a truck and the truss rod had been adjusted to the point of no longer working. I modified it heavily over time. New EMG's, new bridge, fretless for a time, then a new neck. New pickguard, totally rewired. Strippped all the paint and had stained it natural with a wax finish. About 2 and half years ago, after years of faithful roadwork, the band I was playing in at the time had our equipment trailer broken in to. They nabbed 2 telecasters and that bass. Broke my heart. Searched high and low in 3 different cities trying to track it down. Pawn shops, guitar stores, craigslist... and nothing. It wasn't worth a dime to anyone but me. I just hope it's still being played and wasn't chucked in a dumpster or destroyed. It would have been with me 18 years now.

20 years on a active/passive, 3 band e.q., 24 fret, 1983 Ibanez Musician 924DS P/J with dead half-rounds (gives a great P impression). Here's one just like it:

20 some years gigged a ton witha Guild JSII I think it was called. man o man, the guy that set it up and polished the frets was a freaking wizard. I even forgive him for borrowing a P from me dismantling it and asking me how much I wanted for it, he already had part out for rechroming for crying out loud.

Bought my Pbass new in 74 played all these years(thats 37 to the math challenged) but last year i decided i need a spare to leave at practice so i got mim p prolly just the newness of it but i seem to be playing that one more lately
