I train in Krav. I can't live without it! :D

At my school, we fight a lot! When we fight in class, we go all out and do the Muay Thai thing. We also have ground fighting classes... We do a lot of live application drills. I'm going to go into amateur boxing soon, and Krav has me set up for it, but I would need to go and get specialized training for it.

Krav is based on Western Boxing, Muay Thai Boxing, Various Styles of Ground Work, Small Joint Manipulations and common sense....we'll pick up a beer bottle or broom handle if we see one. Our school runs largely on reality based self defence drills and hard core conditioning (In addition to waking up early to hit the heavy bag to Bas Rutten's MMA Thai Boxing and regular Boxing Cd's, my conditioning is pretty amazing for someone who was never considered to be an athlete).

Although this system can almost be considered a MMA due to the fact that we use a "mixed amount of martial arts", THIS SYSTEM IS NOT FOR MMA! It's for self-defence, we don't go around saying we are for MMA competitions, although, the rumor is that we are going to start Bas' MMA System at our location... ;)

I will also agree with KempoFighter that there are great schools and bad schools, but this is in just about every style (including MMA) and other industries as well. I'm lucky, our owner/lead instructor is all about turning us into fighters and making us tough, unfortunately, sometimes we get injured, but that's life... if you don't get a little beat up sometimes, what's the point.

Should I laugh now, or wait until your back is turned?

Wait, hold on, let me explain myself.

I've seen Silat. It involves your partner standing there while you pretend to maim him. When's the last time you did something like that to your partner when he DIDN'T let you do it? Or where he also wanted to do it to you?

Furthermore, how come nobody in UFC or PRIDE use those moves if they're so great? Check the rules, it's ALL LEGAL, so you can't use that as an excuse.

Watch this:

[Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

I did a year of Kung Fu (Temple Kung Fu... a scam... stay away from it), a year of TKD (meh... pretty much crap..)

And now I've been doing BJJ/MMA for almost a year now (what is it with the 1 year mark???). It really opened my eyes to martial arts. How like the poster above me pointed out, it doesn't have to be Asian. Belts don't matter (I'm still a white belt), or any of that other nonsense, just what you can actually do to another person. Now what you think you can do, i.e. "My sensei/sifu/whatever showed me how to kill a man in 1 hit", but what you HAVE done, as in "I have thrown people on their head" or "I have punched people in the jaw". Might seem easy to you to think "hey, I can punch someone in the jaw", but when's the last time you did it? Go to a boxing gym and see if you're really as good at that as you think.

So u think Silat is week?, run up on any silat player with at least a SOLID yr under there belt, I dare ya.

Your incorrect about silat it's not meant to be a sport because of it's breaking techniques, therefore it's not qualified for the UFC,K-1,PRIDE.

Have you heard of Harimau, it's a version of Silat that's ground oriented.

Keep training hard, and playing your bass guitar, and remember to STAY HUMBLE, if at all possible for someone who's still a KID.

Which rules does it break? Bones and joints have been broken in both UFC and PRIDE. You're just making excuses.

Sounds like you train at a solid school. Keep at it man.

I know Bas was teaming up with some Krav guys to make a mixed Krav/MMA Self defense program, but I wasn't too sure if it was completed yet. Let me know if you start doing it, I'd love to hear about it.

I will also agree with KempoFighter that there are great schools and bad schools, but this is in just about every style (including MMA) and other industries as well. This is true, but like I said before, some arts have higher levels of BS or inefficiencies. For example if one were to take Aikido, I'd say there was a MUCH greater chance of them not gaining any viable ability than if they were to take say Kempo or Krav Maga. And I'd say you'd have a much better bet at a mixed kickboxing or MMA gym of finding good instruction than at a local Krav or Kempo school. The problem is, is that the more technical the art, the more likely it is to get caught up in dead training. Ironically though, the most technical of arts (grappling arts) seem to have the most live training out of all of them.

And in regards to things working, and whether the ring being a good judge of such, all I can say is the only difference between fighting and self defense is a fight you intend to win, self defense you intend to survive and get away. Just because eye gouging, groin kicking and biting aren't permitted in MMA doesn't mean that they are granted ultimate technique status. They are low percentage low effective tactics, that can be used to aid the rest of your fight game, but should not be relied on as fight enders. I believe Luis Guitterez said it best...

From his article, "The Myth of Self Defense"
...Street technique versus Sport Techniques or "Just add dirt" I can hear it now from all the street fighters... "But Luis, what about eye gauges, hair pulling, biting, ripping, pinching, scrotum striking, yanking and smashing, scratching, spitting, foaming at the mouth, growling, breaking bottles, wearing boots, colon control and crapping at will?" Well, what about all that? If you can't even hit a guy with a 16oz. glove how the hell are you going to eye jab him? If you can't keep a guy from putting you on the ground and proceeding to do his best rendition of River Dance on your cranium, how the hell are you going to just kick him in the balls or bite him? And if you indeed are getting punched, kicked, and out grappled by a superior martial artist and you get the bright idea to bite him, what's to stop him then from doing the same if not worse to you…and from a much better vantage point to boot? (Pun intended.) Bottom line…if you build a foundation on movement (timing and awareness in motion) and the attributes necessary to deliver and apply efficient strikes, controls and finishes, you just need to add the foul or dirty tactics. It doesn't work the other way around.

"Be like water…then just add dirt."

And BTW, KempoFighter, is there any way that you can have a little talk with Poopy? Can you get him to try to act like an adult? I realize he's only 19, but could you give it a try?

:)

I do not speak for Poop Loops, but I can say that looking back on his posts he is saying essentially the same thing as me, though he came off as confrontational with you guys. Demanding proof of the practicality of systems tends to put people on the defensive, and doesn't lead to productive discussion IMO. Though that is the nature of most discussions on Bullshido hence his propensity to debate that way. I don't think he said anything wrong, he just came off harsh and argumentative.

And by those standards I'm not too much of an adult either, I'm only 22 ;)

Granted I have about 9 years of martial arts training under my belt, and have spent exorbitant amounts of time researching, reading books, articles and watching videos displaying various martial arts in all their forms, I'm still young I suppose compared to some here :bassist:

I truly love my school and feel it's great! :)

In re the Bas/KM thing, yes there have been talks, but I was talking more of the Bas' MMA System..

One thing I like about KM is that it's not at all that technical, not like other Trad MA's... those are just too much for me... I'm a little slow on learning these days and need something simple. I just love the combative as well: Give me my gloves and a partner with some focus mitts/thai pads movin around or better yet, give me my mouthguard and a fightin partner and I'm game. :D

:)

Yeah, but at least you act like one... He acts like a little pompous twit... plus bullshido/sherdog/etc. are just websites with mostly little kids hiding behind their computers... just like someone said on this thread - go and train hard.

BTW, we need to get you a bass and amp. :bassist: :p :D

Haha! Go to bullshido and say that. I dare you. It's been said before. I may be "just a kid", but that's not what the site is like.

I'm an immature *******? Maybe. I doubt that will ever change. I heard a man is who he is by the age of 16. Tell you what, though, I'd rather be an immature ******* than a sheep. I'm HAPPY with who I am. Compared to who I was a few years ago? Dear God, I will NEVER go back.

So, which rules does it break, then? "Immature *******" isn't a rule. Royce broke someone's arm in UFC. Ocular bones have been broken by knees to the face. What rules are you speaking of here?

That's the typical outsider view of BSD. Funny though that most Bullies despise Sherdog MMA nuthuggers :hiding:

Spend a day or so lurking on Bullshido and you'll see real quick who's worth listening to, and who's just riding someone elses coat-tails. There's LOTS of useful MA information floating about that site, and alot of knowledgable posters with a variety of backgrounds who's heads I love to pick.

BTW, we need to get you a bass and amp. :bassist: :p :D

My music instructor/soon to be filthy rich in his band friend has been trying to get me take up Guitar and Piano for the longest time. More people trying to push music on me....all I need :help:

:D

Why would I want to go to bullshido or sherdog for? What's the point? The majority of the people there don't know *** is up to begin with because they are, once again, little 16 year olds who fight in their back yard.... "you double dog dare me?" - dude, grow up! :scowl: :rollno:

In re your dumb "by the age 16" BS - read this thread in another 10 years and you'll be looking back, laughing at yourself, kind of like the way pretty much everyone is laughing at you now.

I was replying to the way you talk, just like a 16 year old... at least you admit it.

Do they all talk like Poopy? If they do, it's not a very credible site, sorry. :)

In re the bass..... shut up and start playing, you'll never look back! ;)

Depending on what section of the site you post on depends on the quality of response you recieve. If you go into the newbie forum, you will most likely find rather concise and accurate answers to any questions. If you go into YMAS and try the same thing, you will still get the legitimate responses, but you are more likely to be subject to shameless flaming and insults. The board doesn't restrict speech in the least to preserve open discussion, but with that freedom often comes abuse, but that's a side effect the board owners are willing to deal with. Other MA sites restrict and moderate threads with heated debates, and it more than not stifles important points from coming about, and gives leeway for liars and BS artists to make points unrebutted.

My forum handle over there is KempoFist, and I often too sometimes join in with one-liner jokes and such that might be considered immature, but when debates and discussion come to the forefront, I like to make them as productive and educational for everyone to learn something. If someone goes on there and says that TKD has something to offer, I'd much rather discuss their points rather than go, "OMG TKD SUXxs so much, How come you don't see TKD in the UFC or PRIDE? Take a r3AL martial art and stop tap sparring!"

But I personally feel that those that would make such a statement are few and far between, and that most BS posters would much rather make solid points and discuss the merits of each others ideas rather than just insult and poke fun.

Not to mention, everything has been argued to death over there. Nobody ever brings anything new to the table. It's always "I don't like what you're saying about XXXX style. What's so wrong with it?"

Just do a search on that style and see what you come up with. There is likely a 20 page thread on it discussing it inside and out. Good and bad.

Yes this is very true. I'd suggest searching for information or discussion on any style or such over there before posting a question, but if you do feel the need to ask something you know deep down inside that has been beaten to death, at least do it in the newbietown forum. I think discussion over there would be a better place than here, but on second thought, having these types of talks on off-topic boards may expose some people to those ideas who otherwise never would even look at a site like Bullshido.
