Why do some of your pedals have a Volume and a Master control?

This is a great question! The reason goes back to the era of non-master volume tube amps. Back in those days in order to get "that" sound, you had to crank the volume to earth shaking levels. With the advent of Master Volume amps, you could still crank the preamp to get "that" sound but tame the overall output with the master volume. The same thing happens with pedals. In the development of these pedals we noticed that the feel of the pedal changed as you adjusted the volume control. In some cases when you turned the volume up the tone became a bit fatter and more loose (which isn't a bad thing if that's what you're looking for!). By adding the master control, you can dime the volume but then adjust the overall pedal output to match unity gain when you bypass it to keep your signal levels constant.

Another great trick with these pedals is this: lower the gain, dime the volume, and control the output with the master. On some pedals like the Virge, you can get some incredible Marshall-type crunch and overdrive sounds that are typical of 70s rock.

@Sensei Tim I struggle to understand how Volume and Master differ on the Super 200. Usually, you get Gain and Master, but I don’t get how one would use Gain, Volume AND Master here.

That's what I do with the Super Two Hundred btw.. Pic from today's rehearsal:

Result is a fat, slightly OD but not very distorted tone, and yeah, sorta "loose"? At any rate, just the ticket for what I need the box for with this band. (Classic Rock covers, mostly played in a punk-y way.)

I’ll be setting up a web page in the next day or so for this pedal

as of right now I have 5 total PCBs and this one enclosure. I’m not sure how much interest there will be for this so I’ll be taking preorders until dec 31 and then I’ll order however many more PCBs and enclosure to fulfil the preorders.

as part of the preorder I’m going to have it on sale for 199 + shipping (20 in Can/US, 60 elsewhere) until dec 31 and then it will be 239 reg price.

anyway its late here. If you have any questions feel free to post here or send a dm and I’ll try to answer as quickly as possible.

cheers

tim

Looks great Tim, I can't wait to try it! Order placed...

[EDIT]: I really like what you did with the graphics and layout.

Excuse my ignorance please.
How and when did the Ashly SC-40 fit into the universe of Geddy? For example, this was long before any other Geddy-labeled pedals and preamps that we have now, right?
Did it feed a GK 700RB at that time, or what?
Thank you.

I believe from Hemispheres (1978) to Signals (1982) Geddy Lee used two Ashly SC-40’s into two BGW 750 power amps. Rickenbacker - Rick-O-Sound out - bridge pickup into one SC-40 w/distortion mod, and neck pickup into the other SC-40 clean, each SC-40 went into separate channels of the stereo BGW’s. I also believe the reason he had two BGW’s was because he had two V4B 2-15” cabinets (which received the signal from neck p/up > clean SC-40), and's two Theile 2-15” designed cabinets (which received the signal from bridge p/up > distortion mod SC-40), each cab had 15” JBL K-140’s. One of the BGW’s fed one V4B and Theile stack stage left and the other BGW fed the other stack stage right.

quick update: Super 40 PCBs shipped today and i should have them friday or monday at the latest. Enclosures seem like they are on schedule to ship Wednesday-ish so i should have them Monday at the latest.

Depending how crazy things are leading up to xmas i might be able to get all of the pre-orders out right before xmas but realistically it will most likely be the week between xmas and new years.

Well hell, guess I should get one to run with my original Ashly SC-40, since finding another one has proven tricky! Plus it has the distortion built in, so I don't have to build a foot switch to enable in on the SC-40. Looks fantastic!

Any chance of getting the prototype-style blue enclosure? ;)

yeah i can certainly do that. shoot me a DM and we can discuss.

Just ordered two Super Fortys, looking forward to joining the club! ;) Even got in contact with Tim - one will be blue and the other the default black to emulate the "blueface" and "blackface" SC-40s of yesteryear. Super nice to talk to and a lovely guy. Been looking for original SC-40s for years now but luckily another member tipped me off here as it's been an empty journey thus far.

Heard all good things about how faithful Master Effects units sound to their inspiration so really looking forward to plugging my Rick-O-Sound in and getting my Geddy on!

quick update: i got the enclosures earlier this week but the PCBs have been sitting at the DHL depot in LA since dec 15 and have only left today.

the first 4 Super 40's shipped earlier this week. If i get the PCBs tomorrow then i might be able to get some more put together this weekend but i don't think i'll be able to get anything into the post until after Xmas.
