Mastodon - The Hunter

I just got it. The song "Curl of the Burl" sounds like it was made for radio play, thus the reason it was released as a single before the album came out. IMO, the real Mastodon fans will hate that song. It sounds like someone mentioned earlier, like Nickelback downtuned.

Who are these people who listen to Mastodon AND Nickelback?:eyebrow: Truly diverse taste in music. :D ;)

IMO, "Curl of the Burl" sounds more like Ozzy. I think it's the tonal quality of the vocals that point me in that direction...

I think the true test of the longevity of the album will be what songs people play at sound check. I still hear Leviathan riffs all the time.

With all due respect, do you really think that is relevant criteria? I think the only criteria I would use is whether or not:

A. The album still sells. (corporate)

and/or

B. People still talk about it. (artistic)

The best albums seem to cover both.

Dark Side of the Moon still sees occasional play on my iPod 30 years after first listen but I'd be hard pressed to remember anyone soundchecking to it, aside from Pink Floyd. Still sells, still gets lip service, even 40 years after its release. IMO,that's longevity.

The Hunter may not be everyones cup of tea, but I think it will stand up as a pretty great record all the same.

Well, it was mostly a joke but If I'm being forced to think about it then yes I do believe it is valid. I still jam on a bunch of Floyd riffs and riffs from all of my favorite bands and albums.

People learn to play songs they love and they continue to play the songs if they still love them. Older Mastodon was fun as hell to play. Newer Mastodon...not so much.

Tastes change. I don't listen to 'em as much as I used to. Don't take my dislike of their new stuff as an attack on them or you.

Totally agree. Just conversation/debate. I don't perceive any attack... When people write about what they think, I like to talk about it... With respect of course. Music means so much, in so many ways, and there are many reasons why we like or dislike what we are listening to at any given time in our lives...

Unless it's Nickelback you are listening to... and that is just EVERY kind of wrong! ;)

Agreed!

On the other hand, those poor guys in Nickelback making all that money and ****. Someone should really help them.

No one has touched the point I made. How do people feel about the fact that there is no way they can pull off the vocals from this album live? They couldn't do CtS and this has way more harmonies/rangy parts.

Should a band record something it cannot physically perform live (outside of guest musicians/reasonable overdubbing)?

I've been saying it for a while; if they want to keep going in this proggy direction then they should get a lead vocalist that can do it and everyone else can do backing vocals. They bury the vocals live for a reason.

Hmmm... an interesting point.

Personally, I think there's nothing wrong with recording something that you cannot reproduce live. I learned a long time ago, not to expect to hear songs, live, exactly like they are on the record. I've been to many shows where a band has had to strip down, re arrange/change keys, add musicians or use sequencers in order to accommodate live, some semblance of what they have produced on record. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not. Good bands, live, will bring something to the music that is difficult to capture in the studio. Maybe Mastodon try too hard to reproduce the studio version and they should concentrate on arrangements that are more manageable live but still capture the flavour of the studio creation. Maybe they can pull it off, maybe they can't, but I don't think they should be sacrificing artistry/musicality in the studio for the sake of live performance.

Sgt Pepper's by the Beatles, don't know if they could have pulled it off as a 4 piece.

The Hunter is a fantastic album. Mastodon is still ahead of the curve. If they leave some people behind, so be it. Their loss. I find it amusing some people may be freaking out that this is their 'black album'. Hardly. Harmonies shouldn't scare a metal head. Blood Mountain was more raw, and IMO, better than Crack the Skye in that regard. Crack the Skye was better than Blood Mountain in terms of the theme/concept. The cool thing is, you don't know which direction they'll take next. They will not return to Leviathan or Remission. I appreciate the transitions in each album, I'd get bored otherwise.

You can hear Ozzy influences and Pink Floyd influences, channeled through a Mastodon prism. Soak it in.

The CtS dvd was awesome, and I've watched it several times. They were obviously pumped about it and thrilled to talk and share and show things.

The dvd that came with the Hunter had little effort put into it. I don't buy the disc for the dvd, but it left me with a sour impression that they weren't so proud of the Hunter.

Also, I really like the album, but can't shake the feeling that I've heard these hooks before.

I dunno overdubs and additional musicians strike me as different than recording vocals that the band cannot sing live because of range/can't sing when they're playing.

Love Mastodon, but that's a big knock on them for me.
