I have a 59 Fender Bassman head that needs a bottom. Curently I am using a generic 4 x 10 cabinet, but I know it's not right. Surely somebody has some good suggestions.....?

What do you want? Anything that sounds good to you should do the trick. Or are you seeking a "correct" cabinet? In that case it'd be the small Fender 2x12 Bassman cabinet with the matching Tolex to your amp.

i know this much ( ) about the needs of the speakers vs. the output of the amp. The bottom i have now, (its actually 4 x 12 ) sounds fine until you raise the volume. At higher volumes, the low notes produce alot of distortion, and I know that's not what I want. Could be in the construction of the cabinet, or just the quality of the speakers?? I know they are 8 ohm units, but beyond that its over my head. Just looking for some insight.
Your cabinet looks like a slant back 4X12 cabinet. If that's the case, it's not a bass cabinet, it's a guitar cabinet. The speakers it uses aren't designed to reproduce low end the same way the speakers in a proper bass cab are, that's why you're having problems with it.
i knew it was a guitar cab. i picked it up cheap after my bass cab. was stolen. I figured it would get used as my son picked up guitar (unless I ruin it..) Now Im looking to replace it and just needed some education before I buy.
Take the head to a guitar shop, plug it into a variety of BASS cabs, and see what sounds good. One thing is for sure, ANY bass cab will sound better than what you've got. My preference for that head would be a 15, or better, a 215.
