MAYA bass

Hi Folks

I own a Maya precision bass, which I bought second hand in 1981.

Does anyone have any info on the Maya company? I would just like to know a little bit about where & when the bass might have been made.

All I know is that Maya was a Japanese company & is no longer in business.

Hello Gary,

Just bought exactly same bass as yourself yesterday.
Nice guitar. I would certainly say better than current Squiers, though not as good as my old Tokai. However, Maya seems to have a slightly faster neck(?)

Have you done any mods to your bass.. pickups, bridge, etc?

Our gitarist has exactly the same bass. Perhaps I may do some modding to it on his costs. The PG is broken and the pots are not working good. Neck is indeed fast.

Maya bass I have is OK. Tuners work well, bridge functions, & surprisingly the pick-up has nice vintage sound to my ears. So I guess I wont be modding it. Quite happy with it, the way it is.

I have a Maya Jazz bass, natural finish, maple fretboard, late 80s I would guess. I upgraded the tuners, and the bridge pickup is a little weak, but I wouldn't trade it for any Squier. The neck is fast, and it's worth the $400 I paid for it.

All I know is they produced guitars and basses in Japan from the mid-'70s to the mid-'80s. They also had a cheaper line called El Maya that made Fender clones.

I used to have a Maya Rickenbacker. The only difference was the single truss rod and that being a "s" model , it shouldn't have two outputs .

As a ric user (lifelong), I can tell you that this bass played as good as any ric , and it actually sounded better lol

I have now had confirmed that Maya in Japan are not producing and the Maya models, they are now being copied in China, so they are a copy of a copy as for quality I can't comment.
