Has anyone ever heard of marinating Chromes (or any string for that matter) in mayonnaise? Apparently it makes them sound broken in. Is the an urban legend?

it's basically just oil.

Ah I see. So can I use any oil? Like olive oil or is it too clean? How long do I keep them submerged?
This is all just gross...
The vinegar in the Mayo will rapidly oxidize the string to some extent, and dull the sound....but why...??? Jeeze...!

It looks cool, but it's a poor design as far as playability & upper fret access are concerned.
I much prefer my custom-built NEO FishBass, internally lit with real blue & green neon...
I prefer miracle whip. It has a little bit of zing to it. But, to each his own.
any kinda of sticky gunk will knock down the high freqs ...
but playing them for a while , causing those tiny flatter spots where the strings meet the frets , which also kills some high harmonics content ... that just takes playing time ..

I heard soaking your fretboard in turpentine helps keep it clean, at least for playing metal. If in doubt it makes a good drink for when you're out at sea too.
