Let's not forget the fact, though, that Mayweather is 40 and hadn't fought in more than two years. McGregor is 29. Maybe a skilled boxer of the same age and size, with months to prepare, would make for a decent MMA match.

i don't even think age is much of a factor at all here.

asking connor to fight in a boxing match is like having a guitar player prepare for an audition on bass. it can be done, but don't expect the performance to be on par with jaco.

asking a boxer of any age / skill level to fight in MMA is like asking that same guitar player to be prepared for an audition on every instrument in a full symphony orchestra. it's just less realistic i think.

Muscle memory is involved here. As a person who has dabbled in both I can say that the mindset is so different for both. I was impressed Connor didn't use an elbow or at least show a hint that he was going to lift a leg. The only "tell" that I could see from him and his many years of MMA training was his propensity to hold and then get behind Mayweather nearly every time. His mind tells him to take Mayweathers back. If a Boxer was to find themselves in the ground game it would quickly be over. Even pedestrian MMA guys would have a massive advantage on a boxer because protecting their neck or joints isn't second nature to them. The good ole fight or flight would kick in and they would likely give up a worse position and end up asleep or with a dislocated elbow.

@kesslari could speak more eloquently about the ground game as I was never a BJJ practitioner but it's a massive deficit to overcome.
