Make mine a fretless and with a Z-3 pickup configuration and I'm pretty sure I could die happy.

;) You know me...there might be one or two other tweaks...

None of Sheldon's pickups are common humbuckers or single coils. The "fatties" on this model are split coils wired in series I believe. Most of his basses are split coil that can be switched internally between series and parallel.

I like the look of a ebony fingerboard, but I don't think that Sheldon likes to work with Ebony? It tends to like to crack, etc.

The Sklar is a Z-2 configuration, but I'd love the extra pickup in the neck position that the Z-3 affords. :) Either way, it's one mofo of a bass!

Sheldon, if you're around...how about a rundown of the Sklar model's specs and what makes it different from the usual Z series Dingwall basses?

Yes, his "humbuckers" are actually split coil, reverse-P style pickups disguised in humbucker housings.

No ebony? Interesting. I thought it was a preferred fretboard wood. I guess ebanol would work just fine, then.

Z-3 = extra in neck position? Ballin'!

I would think that a properly treated board of another kind would work just fine, either epoxy or polyester. I'd like mine in high-gloss to work a hot-rod vibe...and some extra chrome would be nice too. :D

Thanks for the props. I really love this color too.

We don't use Gaboon ebony due to stability problems. We have started to use Macassar Ebony for fretless fingerboards. I had to be talked into it, but now I'm sold. The stuff is beautiful of course and it's tone is almost exactly the same as epoxy coated wenge. I will likely wear more than the epoxy but the white line markers show up so much better that I think it's a fair trade off.

The Sklar body is Northern Ash on the bass half and Alder on the treble half - a standard Z is heavy swamp ash on the bass side, light swamp ash on the treble side. The pickups are pre-wired in series. The mid control is pre-wired for 250 Hz. The rotary switch is wired Bridge, Parallel, Neck, Series which is how we used to wire them back when we built Lee's red bass. The frets are Mando size and theres a little thumb recess to aid removing the control cover plate.

Thanks Sheldon, it really is a stunning color. I fell in love with a very similar color at a car show not too long ago. Your "candy" colors are pretty wicked and I can't wait to see what's next.

Its also good to hear that you're using some ebony these days. Really the only bass I think about getting from time to time is a Z-3 fretless of some kind, but the simplicity of the Sklar setup is really appealing.

Well, I'll be darned... you make the two halves of the body out of different woods?... ingenious... I've not heard of anyone doing that before.

Gotta hand it to you, the more I know about your basses, the more intrigued I am. Some real innovation going on there!

Hey Sheldon, do you still have those pictures of what I believe was Tom Bowlus' Prima Artist? IIRC, it not only had dual type/dual density wood, but it was easy to see how it was put together and the unique joinery involved...

I own a Sklar-sig, and it is hands down amazing. The sounds really punches, and the simplicity and playability of the thing is stunning.

It is not a Tangerine one though, but the slightly more conservative(!) Candy Apple Green. I love it to bits!:smug:

I'd like to see Sheldon work some other fun candy colors...candy raspberry pink anyone? or Howzabout a cool metallic purple.
