How would you say that Ziricote compares tonally with Macassar Ebony on a Dingwall fingerboard? Bass Player reviewed a Prima Artist 5-string in September of 2005 that had a Ziricote fingerboard and and top - beautiful!

I thought I had one showing the end of the bass, where you could see the transition from walnut to alder, but I can't find that one.

Man, I do miss that bass. :bawl: It was ooooh, so nice! Of course, this one helps me get over it! :D

I have recently picked up two basses with a ziricote board, and it seems to be fairly similar to mac ebony, to my ears. If anything, I'd say that the high end snap covers a wider frequency range on ziricote, as opposed to the fairly focused "ping" of ebony.

It certainly is a lovely wood!

That is an interesting observation...I would have expected the Ziricote to "absorb" more of the higher frequencies due to the larger natural oil content of Ziricote.

Our intentions are to use Mac Eb only on fretlesses so I don't have any testing conclusions as to the differences between the two. I'll defer to Tom's comments.

I know I've taken photos of that, but I can't seem to find them. I'll post some of the Prima Artists we're working on now.

Why avoid M. Ebony on fretted Dingwalls?

What is it about Ziricote that makes you want to use it for fretted fingerboards?

I should have added that it is a more broad, but less extreme, high end snap, relative to mac ebony. :cool:

I just played the Sklar at Atlanta Bass Gallery in the Candy Apple Green colour and it's INCREDIBLE!! It was my first fanned fret I ever played but dang it was awesome. I didn't take the time to play with the electronics, I kinda just left everything flat and played around. Really sweet guitar, even sweeter colour!!

It was a beautiful bass, Tom...but the new one is a stunner too! Am I right in thinking that yours was the first of the new 'Prima' body style with the down-turned lower horn?

From the back picture you can clearly see that the body is half walnut and half alder.

I may also have saved copies of some of those pictures...It might take some digging, but I'll see what I can come up with too. It's such a cool concept to give more surface area to the join, but also looks sweet.

I'm not sure if it was one of the very first, but that bass was indeed ordered (by someone else, though I ended up buying it "new") around the time that Sheldon introduced the new Prima body style.

Start negotiating with Mr. Bowlus. Although I do have to warn you that I think he's fairly attached to that bass, and the negotiations might be tough as he's a lawyer. ;)

Have you gotten tired of PM offers for it yet, Tom?

I know that I'd had my Zebra/Voodoo for less than a full day before I started to get PM's demanding I sell it to them. Some people really thought they had a chance. ;)
