So due to my luthier Dan having personal issues, the neck won't be done until after the new year. Oh well, such is life.
In the meantime I did a little project. I put together a a P-bass 'parts bass' a couple months ago and decided to add a bridge pu. The neck, body, pg and bridge were given to me as a partial trade for some 'friend' work. The maple/maple neck might be an SX judging by the hs shape, which I redefined. It is decent and the frets are 'like new'. I stripped the amber gloss off the neck and left it on the fb. Looks good. Installed vintage Ibanez "heart-shaped" paddle tuners, a Fender PV63 P pu, and electronics. Turned out to be a really good sounding P.
So installing the bridge pu (31.5" from the nut - pretty much like a pre-CBS J), I routed for it and discovered that the body is (swamp) ash! It's a light bass and the Fiesta red body was generic so I assumed it was basswood. A pleasant surprise. I decided to install a stacked pot for both pu's volumes, and had a Dano knob/collar set in my parts bin. I hooked it up but the lipstick pu is weak. Most lipstick pu's are in the 4k range, and a bridge J pu is 7.5k. I searched the web and found a Kent Armstrong SLHD-1CRR Split Tube Series Saturn 5 Hot Lipstick Pickup that ohms in at... 7.5k! Got the last one the Reverb seller offered. Owning and playing my Dano-made basses, I love the Dano bridge pu tone and I'm looking forward to hearing this cool P/L. P's (like this one) are generally darker sounding and the punchy lipstick pu should offer a broader tonal range. I'm generally a "mid-range tone" bass player. Updates once the pu arrives and is installed.
A final note: a "parts bass" is perfect for "whim" modding. Like "why not?"... if it leads to a bass you are drawn to play - score!
The 'hook' was there, I rounded-off the Fender-esk lower section to look more like a Tele hs shape.
The maple fb catches light and looks like binding - subtle and nice.

I've grown quite fond of the generic Fiesta red P, and I'm hoping this pu will broaden it's sonic worth to me.
