Medleys

Just curious, but for all those in bands, do you have any medleys in your repertoire?

We do La Bamba and Twist and Shout. Quite the crowd pleaser.

Anybody find them to be too corny?

We are more Segues than Medleys. But, I understand a lot of bands will do a style medley to great acclaim. Rather than devote an entire set to 80's music, just do a medley of hooks.

I prefer mashups to medleys. Going back and forth between two similar songs. Verse from one, chorus from another, maybe a bridge from a 3rd.

We used to do "I Want a New Drug" and "Ghostbusters" as a mash-up. Even BEFORE the lawsuit. I think we did a few more, but it was the 80's and I don't quite remember...

Not your band's genre of music? You don't like either one of the songs?

It came to mind at a jam one night. Somebody started playing La Bamba and when they forgot the words after a while, I held the G chord and started doing the "ah, ah...." and everyone knew where I was going with it and we went right in to singing Twist and Shout. After that, we decided to add it to our set list.

I wish I had an objective standard by which I could evaluate songs I like and dislike, but I don't.

My opinion is that it's trite garbage music with no thought at all put into the lyrics, melody, groove, etc. Just happy horse doody that does nothing for me emotionally. Not to mention I've heard those songs so many times that it induces an immediate puke session. So boring.

At the same time, however, The song (Don't Talk) Put Your Head On My Shoulder by the Beach Boys is the most gut wrenching, beautiful song I've ever heard, but there's no way I could PROVE that. I wish everyone thought that, haha.

It's nothing against you personally, though. Your job is to get those people to sing and dance and Twist and Shout and La Bamba are all time crowd pleasing favorites. It's a no brainer.

I opt for more emotionally stimulating songs (to me) that rarely get heard or played, like I Shoulda Loved Ya by Michael Narada Walden or Love Come Down by Evelyn King.

Hope I didn't come across as a snob or anything... It's the music I hate, not the people who listen to it!!!

Not at all. I was curious about the reason.

There are a lot of people who dislike songs over time because they are overplayed. The question is, is it real or perceived?

I don't really listen to a lot of radio so I don't feel like anything is overplayed. That's my perception. Stairway To Heaven, Freebird, Brown Eyed Girl, Mustang Sally, I love those songs. They've surely been played to death, but I personally haven't heard or played them often enough to get bored with them.

One of my bands does a "50s Medley" of Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On -> Great Balls of Fire -> Good Golly Miss Molly. The first two are in E, and then it modulates to G via a little chromatic bridge for the last tune.

Everytime I hear the beach boys. I wanna shoot myself. Most gut wrenching crap I've heard. I respect that you like it though.

We did a mesh up of Heartbreak Hotel/Rocky Mountain Way that always got folks on their feet. Best one I saw was a mid level act in the late 80's. They tied almost a whole set together with classic Alice Cooper done as a medley. Always hoped I would run into those guys again. I have no idea what their name was, but they pulled off 30 minutes of a Cooper medley with class.
