Meet Grace, and her bass

Hello everyone!

Don't mean to de-rail this thread...but my son Jeremy (who also has had Spinal surgery and a single rod placed in his back, along with de-tethering of the spinal cord) is doing really well.

As an added bonus...he wants a bass for his birthday (in September)! I am excited about this. He's never really shown an interest in learning music before, so I am really stoked! I am going to try to buy him one. :hyper:

Are there any other similar basses, just in case I cannot acquire an identical model to Grace's? (Different brands, same size?)

Again, I apologize for adding this, but I am really happy!

Please continue to update us on Grace's progress! Let us know if we can send her a card to remind her we still care!

Some brands offer nice lightweight shortscale basses. Wich would be ideal.
I don't know how it is in the stores in the US, but over here these kind of basses are rarely in stock. :hmm:

I'm sure many luthiers are happy to help you out by building a bass that would suit your son.
As much devotion as most luthiers put in building, most of them are devoted to help out people with some physique issues.
Search around a bit, and you'll find one.

Rudyboy, give the Ibanez Mikro a spin- I think your son could really dig it. It's not a "toy bass", it's the real deal, and it actually has good tone- most short scales I've ever played had a choked, "tubby" sound to them. Not so with the Mikro. They're not expensive, either. And they are light, which helps with avoiding a lot of strain on the back. Comes in black, too, not just purple (though I would not have a problem rocking a purple one, myself!)...

Good luck to your son in his quest for low-end goodness! :)

P.s. rudyboy, the epiphone viola is Very light, shortscale and looks very cool, maybe consider that one.
I hope your son digs the low-end.:bassist:

I haven't seen a Mikro last time I shopped, so I was looking for a similar make/model. (I have nothing against something I haven't played yet, thank goodness!)

I will definitely be on the lookout for the Mikro. If I find one, I'll give it a spin and see if my son likes it!

Grace is working her way through one of the books, A complete idiot's guide to bass playing.

I keep trying to pin her down on a time for a lesson, but she hasn't scheduled one yet.:hmm:

She loves the bass, the amp, and everything else that has been sent to her.

I need to take her the DVD's and a couple of books that came yesterday.

I'm super late on this one but I'm sure glad I found it. I read through every page of this thread!!!

Such an inspiring story and as others have said, seeing the look on her face when she got that bass is priceless!!!!

Try some of the smaller retailers that carry Ibanez. No GC I have ever been in carries one.

The man speaks the truth! Grace was over a couple of nights ago (update in next post!) and I was again amazed at how good this little bass sounds. Not tubby at all!
