Meet Grace, and her bass

This story needs an update. C'mon, embellisher, let us know what's going on for Grace! We're all pulling for her!
Grace had some major complications from her surgery, and spent several months recovering from staph infections and other complications. The Doctors just released her to go back to school two weeks ago, they had been having her work sent home up to that point.
We finally had our first lesson Tuesday night. As it turned out, she did not read much of the first book we are going through, so I walked her through the first chapter, which bassically
teaches you what all of the parts on the bass are called, and what they are for.Then I walked her through tuning her bass, told her the names of the open strings, how to tune the bass to itself in case the tuner isn't handy, and a short primer on left and right hand technique, so that she will not get into any bad habits while she practices the few things we went over.
I assigned her to read the next chapter in the book, and to practice plucking the open strings, memorize the notes, and tuning.
Next Tuesday night, we will have our second lesson.
She is so pumped! She really enjoyed the lesson, and is happy that she can now at least make a noise that sounds like a bass player, instead of fumbling around.
Anyway, sorry for the long time between updates, but there really hasn't been anything to report before now.

Our youth pastor's wife just had a baby, and her Mom told me that she wants me to give him lessons as soon as he is old enough. She told me that I had to teach him how to play just like me!
Poor kid. So, I will have another student in a few years.And, the assistant pastor at a church in our section wants to pay me to give him lessons, so I may soon have my first paying student.

This thread was definitely a heart-warmer. Great to see music improving people's lives. And sparkly pink basses are always fun.

I apologize for being late to this thread, but I wanted to chime in a bit...hope you don't mind!
I just think it's so cool that she is this excited, and I hope that she always has the joy and exuberance of music in her life! Rock on, Grace!

I haven't been able to log in for days and consequently have only now seen the thread.
All I can say is RIGHT ON Eric! What great acts of kindness from both you and embellisher.
Somehow, it didn't surprise me when I saw that BASSIC83 was one of the movers in this. You took the trouble once to give me some very good advice on modding my Dean Bromberg B2 through a series of patient PM's, for which I remain eternally grateful.
Music is, indeed, the food of life.
How appropriate it is that during this time of crisis and negativity, that we can log on here and check out this thread and get some positivity and good feelings from Grace! Just the little pick-me-up MY spirits needed, what say you all?

And not to diminish Grace's story, but Bassic83 is absolutely correct. There are opportunitties in your own backyards. I have a soft spot for kids, so I'm working on projects in that area. Get in touch with your local children's hospital, churches, youth organizations. And while money certainly helps, time can be just as important. Your experiences can be invaluable to a young mind. Big Brothers/Big Sisters had/has mentoring programs. And make no mistake it can be as uplifting for as it is for the child.

Thanks for the update, Embellisher! I'm sorry to hear Grace had to go through complications, but glad to hear she's recovering and playing now. Again, my hat is off to you for this wonderful thing you're doing.
