We were discussing this in another thread. Both Coltrane and Bird can be considered "compositional" improvisers, yeah they strung phrases together but they did it in a way that made sense. They compose/improvise by putting practiced ideas together in a different order but the result was that they made incredible music.
When us mortals do the same, it can be arbitrary in the way we sequence the phrases. Especially when ideas don't get developed and you go from phrase to phrase and nothing relates to eachother. IMO, Giants Steps is an amazing demonstration of phrasing in a common train of thought at a breakneck speed.
