Memory Boy Clips!

So I posted about this baby earlier. Thought I'd quickly throw some clips together.

Note
1 - I suck at recording, so excuse the low low volumes
2 - I freeze up a bit recording, my playing suffers
3 - Two of my strings are brand new and annoyingly bright, and the other too are possibley a bit too damp.
4 - I just play whatever I find musical, so its not a great representation


Here are some clean Memory Boy only clips.

Clip 1 - Just some clean following delay to show the dark analog character.

Memory Boy + Other Effects

Clip 4 - Memory Boy and EHX BMS -This is a riff my band uses, the delay adds some nice depth to the sound and the warm analog tone makes it a bit more sombre.

Clip 5 - Memory Boy and Barber LTD SR -This is a riff from one of my band songs, just showing the sombre dark tones you can get pairing analog delay and OD.

Clip 6 - Using a EHX BMS to show a musical way of using the Square Wave modulation, high feedback and depth. I play with oscillation at the end.

So there you go, I will probablly do more clips later when I don't have a giant pile of Jurisprudence and Natural Law Theory readings to get through.

This only scratches the surface a bit on what the pedal can do. There plenty to be explored and clips by others and myself. But don't expect any chorus examples from me cos I can do anything musical with that particular world of modulation :P I'll leave that too Boo

Nice clips. I was planning on getting a hardwire DL-8 for the delay / loop in one pedal.
But after hearing this my gas may be floating me in a different direction. Now I might have to explain two purchases to the wife . Oh and now I want a BMS . Maybe I can convince her to get a second job ?

Manual says 30-550 milliseconds which IMHO is a good musical amount for most people (or atleast me! :p)

BUT - I know some people think the original Memory Man didn't quite have the 550ms it was supposed to have. So maybe someone could test the Memory Boy empirically?

Not to turn this into a penis measuring contest, but I've had 6 and they were all far too similar for anyone to ever notice the difference on a recording (a song, that is) or live. Though I will say that perhaps the Boss PS-2 would be noticeable as a result of it sounding a little more 'lo-fi'.

Anyway - great clips and great playing. I loved your band riff as well.

Well the audience framework is the decider there. Your spot on though, despite my person nitpicking, most people probablly won't care. I will say though that the square wave modulation and the other non-traditional delay stuff this pedal can do is quite unique to my personal experience. So unique that I haven't really gotten my head around it well enough to post any non-traditional clips :p

Yes and no. In general it is fairly easy to tell the difference between analog and digital delay, and in most cases even digital delay trying to sound like analog delay.

To me the decision always comes down to whether I need tap tempo or self-oscillation more. For me it's TT. For someone like nad, it's self-oscillation. But the delays themselves do sound differently. I think analog delays sound better, but I also think it's much easier for them to sound like mud in a full mix.

Back on topic, the Memory Boy looks/sounds like everything people hoped it would be. That's an impressive box for $99. And as always, nice playing icarussmicarus.

Side question: Do you always play with a pick? The reason I ask is that I've found that often analog delays on bass sound best with pick playing.

I play both but I find that whenever I play with effects I tend to use my picks, also I've come to favour pick playing more recently because thats what I use in my band.

I started playing when I was 15 as your average fingerstyle/overslapping flea wannabe and then magically gravitated towards the pick.

I'm actually planning to do some more clips and I'll try some fingerstyle aswell. It's funny I had completely shunned slap for a few years after it left a bad taste in my mouth, but the rhythmic fun possible with this delay and aggressive slap has me reinventing that old thumb callus :p


Edit - I remember now the last BMS clip is fingerstyle though technique is kinda buried in the 2 effects. Honestly I can't really explain definatively why I choose to pick or finger certain things, just felt right at the time.

I'd be interested in hearing some fingerstyle clips for sure, but I do think the bright pick attack mates well with the darker analog repeats. When I had my Carbon Copy I liked it a lot for pick playing but not as much for fingerstyle. And I don't like analog delay at all for slap, but that's just me.

I used to go back and forth about whether I should invest practice time in refining my slap technique but the reality is that outside of one gig that requires it, it really is just a showoff technique for me. So while I can appreciate it when others do it well, I've pretty much stopped working on it at all.
