Memory Boy Clips!

That sounds pretty nice. For the price, it sounds ****ing amazing.

As a self-proclaimed Delay Whore I'll agree that in a mix, the subtle differences between various delays do not exactly come out, when embarking upon normal usage. However, since so much of my delay time is spent in a solo context, I like having That Perfect Sound for such things. Also, the whole self-oscillation bit really does separate even the quite similar ones. For example, Dark and Bright Malekkos sound pretty close to one another for general delay experiments, but sound completely different when you get them to self-oscillate.

Still holding out for a 616 as my next delay (or if I find an Echo Box for cheap), but I think for the price I might scoop up one of these anyhow. Some day I'll buy my first EHX pedal...

These are great clips in terms of effects usage and playing.

But the recording thing was basically a subtle cry for help. I am increasingly frustrated with how soft the volume is on my home recordings. I basically have to crank my speakers up another 25% from average sound to make it audible.

One thing I wonder about the new Malekko's is since they and EHX are all moving to chinese IC's, wether they are in fact buying them from the same place? I don't really have a great understanding of the process but I just wonder if it is like how the majority of tubes come from a few russian factories.

After hearing them I don't think it is a bad thing, I'm just interested in the production process generally.

I hear you. My recordings are typically the same. I keep thinking about spending more time in the recording subforum, but they always seem to want to reduce noise, and that just seems wrong to me.

+1 It kinda pisses me off when you tell someone: "I play bass" and they answer "Really? can you slap?" I like slap but its not the best thing you can do with a bass...

Also for Chronicle and Hollow Man personal interest. The memory boy knocked the echobox off my board. There is definately plenty of reason to choose either over the other depending on your style and approach, for me personally the Memory Boy fits, knocks the subdecay off after about 7 months on my board.

Well, ProGuitarShop is shipping pre-ordered 616s starting this week. But from what I was told the 919 is still being built but it's currently planned for early summer 2010.

hi everybody,

i hope this isnt the wrong thread,but it seemed the most fitting to me.

today i finally received my memory boy from hotrox.uk, but as i unwrapped it and started to use it with my amp the disappointment was great :

it produces some weird windish-sizzling-noise in the delays ;(

i instantly tried it with an guitar ... no noise !

so my question is : could this be caused by my active ibanez bass ?
anyone had similar experiences, or a clue ?

can you tell me what settings you have the knobs on during the "clean analog delay" clip? i recently got the memory boy, and when i play around with it, it seems like everything comes out really muddy. also, the depth knob seems really impractical to me.. especially in the square wave mode. i'm a pretty big noob when it comes to effects so i'm thinking maybe i'm just using it wrong. i really like how the delay sounds in your clips and but i can't seem to figure out how the repeats are coming out so clearly. do you think you can share the settings that you put the pedal in during some of those clips, more specifically the "clean analog delay", "overdrive dark repeats", and "rhythmic fun".

... i was originally going to PM you with this, but i just decided to post it on public so maybe if other people also have suggestions, you guys can also give me some tips... alrighty thanks everyone!

This only scratches the surface a bit on what the pedal can do. There plenty to be explored and clips by others and myself. But don't expect any chorus examples from me cos I can do anything musical with that particular world of modulation I'll leave that too Boo

Delay on bass isn't the easiest of beginner effects to try because its one of the types that you have to adjust your playing to, specifically if you are trying to make your repeats clear you need to feed it delibrate, strong notes. Any fret clatter or ringing of other strings or anything thats not just the note will also be delayed and therefore muddy the mix.

In those clips I'm playing with a pick which gives my notes a more staccato attack which picks up cleanly in the repeats. Importantly I don't let the notes sustain for long, its a big part of the sortof thing I use delay for, for that quick following note sound. The idea is to do things you normally wouldn't do with a clean signal, overly emphasised staccato and thin notes without sustain - the thickness will come from the addition of the delayed notes

I find using a pick particularly useful for this analog delay because of its dark character, if you read above Jared who has had more experience with multiple analog delays suggests its a trend amongst all analogs. Theres a possibility that you might get more joy out of a good sounding digital delay (I suggest subdecay echobox as an analog sounding digital delay). I will however be doing some clips of it with fingers soon since I promised Jared and it looks like I have a break between law assignments to finally do it!

As far as settings - all modulation is off, I'm not a huge fan of it on bass and personally struggle to use it musically outside of guitar. Can't give you exact delay times off the top of my head but all the clips have the delay somewhere between 3 o'clock and 5 o'clock. I have the mix knob set at 12 for unity so that my delayed notes are identical to my clean notes.
The most important thing is to listen carefully to the delay time and attempt to interact with it, if you lose timing with the repeats, then muddiness is bound to happen.

I should hopefully be doing more Memory Boy clips this weekend. I just recently bought a DD-20 for the second time and will probablly do a comparison of its analog modelling to the memory boy aswell.

actually that helped TREMENDOUSLY. once i started staccatoing the notes and making sure my attack was strong, everything became a lot clearer. i didnt realize before that the way the effects come out was so dependent on my own playing, instead of the knobs. now the only thing is, im starting to play the bass like as if i'm a guitar player. lol. i'm originally a guitar player that switched to bass and it's taken me some time for transitioning into a bass guitar mindset and i find that this delay kind of brings me back to the guitar mindset.
