Meris Enzo X

Enzo X into effects loop Arkham UltraLinear 70. Kept the amp pretty much flat. My board is pictured. Preset #38. C1 wound up being @ about 40% Decay, C2 @ 70% Mix. The slightest variation required unplugging the Enzo X; i got put into an unfortunate loop of sorts with the Hold Modifier. Im doing something wrong. Here’s my board. Enzo X is going into the effects loop of the Arkham; feed is Tuner> JohnK OC1/ CS2 > Broughton Scorpion/ Broughton Silver Deluxe> tubedrve/ LowRider> Arkham UltraLinear 70. Instrument Ken Smith Fretless 4 strung with Sadowsky Blue flats.

You could just do a hard reset back to stock presets? if you think you overtweaked it beyond return....

Theres 98 more. Each has its own parameters. The Mercury X had three that attracted me; it’s like an encyclopedia written in different languages. I’ve only scratched the surface. Other Presets await. 86 interested me. Presets in the teens were ethereal. Stupid thing rocks. Kicks MY ass. For the time being, i was after the “Keeps You Running” deep bass line. That synthy groove. 38 came close.

I currently have the C4, FI v4, Boss Sy1000, Roland GR55, H90, and have owned an Enzo and played through a few of the digital EHX synths (for me they were useless with bass).

Out of all those I find the Future Impact v4 and Eventide H90 to track the best for my needs when using pitch tracking sounds. I find the Future Impact v4 tracking pretty great (both accuracy and speed) for my needs for the Moog-like sounds (the previous FI was too glitchy though), and the new Eventide H90 synth algorithms probably the best of all so far as far as tracking (though I prefer the sounds of the Future Impact). Not sure what Eventide is using, but it may well be some sort of predictive algorithm as it really is impressive (and polyphonic!).

Out of all of these digital options I end up using the non-tracking sounds in the SY-1000 the most as there is no real latency or strangeness when using my 13-pin equipped instruments to make synth-like sounds (like the other Boss SY pedals, most of the sounds in the SY-1000 shape your input sound into the final sound and so have little to no noticeable latency- on the other hand the pitch-tracking engine also included in the SY-1000 has some of the highest latency of any of them I have apart from the GR-55). Of course those sounds in the SY-1000 are basically the digital equivalent of an octaver-fuzz-filter type synth approach (though more versatile and polyphonic), and so somewhat limiting at approaching realistic synth sounds. There are trade offs with any of these approaches for sure!

That's a super helpful and big shout out to the FI v4 regarding its tracking, thank you! @Quatschmacher will be delighted with that feedback!

Made doubly useful for me by the fact that, like you, I also found the earlier FI models glitchy. That was routinely dismissed as being down to "poor technique" by some of the FI fanclub, until FI's technical crew finally spotted there had been a coding error resulting in avoidable glitchiness, which they have now corrected.

The new FI v4 Compact, announced today, is definitely on my radar!

The Enzo X does look fab on paper, but if it has poor tracking, that's unfortunately going to limit its live use for my covers band and it's not a cheap pedal. For creative inspiration, though, it could be great!

I didn’t hear that about the coding errors in the earlier Future Impact- is there an update for the older ones to fix that as well? I still have my v3. In any case I can confirm the v4 is a huge improvement! I had assumed the improvements just involved more capable hardware and honing in the algorithm to suit

@Quatschmacher will be able to advise if there has been a software update to fix this in earlier models, but my recollection is yes they have.

Bummer. Any one have clips of their attempts?

I think it’s always hard to find critical reviews of these things and where TB can really shine.

I really don’t trust the YouTube folks to be upfront with the short comings and instead celebrate what is possible without implying the limits.

I’ve always wanted something like this but my expectations never seem to meet reality. Keyboard synth seems to be it for me still. Would love to do it from a bass instead as the instrument is more natural for me.

To be honest, I haven't had any issues with tracking - works great for me. Most of the default presets are junk, so if you're counting on those to all work perfectly, then yes, you'll be disappointed. If you're using any of the poly modes, then of course there is latency....and some of the mono built in presets have crazy long ADSR envelopes, etc. that keep quick notes from triggering (so if you're trying a mono patch with a bunch of swells and stuff in it and trying to play quickly, yeah, half of your notes won't register....but that doesn't have anything to do with tracking - those notes wouldn't register if you were playing a keyboard either).

To test the actual tracking, grab a blank mono preset (like 99) and just create a unison or -12 oscillator - keep the filters and amplitude envelopes off. That will show you how it's truly tracking your notes. Then based on how you are expecting to use the patch, create filters/amplitude envelopes accordingly. I'm used to playing analogue octaves, so I'm generally playing high up on the neck for synthy stuff anyway (instead of creating oscillator at unison and playing low, I prefer playing higher with -12 oscillator)....but the Enzo X, for me, tracks incredibly well down to about F# (I can hit my low E, but it will bounce octaves on me).
