Well, the 400 is still richer in tone, and when pushed into overdrive sounds sweet. But when I play outdoors, she runs out of steam.
The Titan does sound great and warm and has that glassy tubey sound on top, but the overdrive leaves a little to be desired. Not as rich as the 400, but it's got horsepower out the wazoo.

Hey Dog,

I also am from the northern country. I have to say I find your post somewhat funny as you aren't talking to a bunch of AMPEG SVT junkies ... My all tube MESA BASS 400 (225 watts at 8 or 4 Ohms) is 35 lbs ... Just sayin'. Cheers.

Yeah, I hear ya. I have an SVT VR and a SVT4 PRO. I heard about these becoming scarce and the great sound of the 400 + so I got a hold of one and it is awesome. I run the Macca setup with a 400+ in a huge MESA schock rack along with the SVT 4 PRO into two road ready mesa cabs. (1) 1516 and (1) 2X15. Awesome Rig, just a pain in the butt to move around.

I guess I'm on the fence...I have tried out Mesa Boogie 400 + heads several times when onstage playing with other bands during sound checks etc, though usually just for a few minutes and even though I was rushed, I always liked the sound of them very much. I own a Mesa Boogie Titan V12, and have owned 2 Mesa Walkaouts... and IMHO they are respectively, the best big amp, and the best little amp on the planet...I love them alot after playing so many other amps the past 40 years(though I have not played every single available amp and AB'd them extensively... I'll leave that to the more capable Tom Bowlus and others). I am first a bassist, and have'nt had a terrible amount of gas until I joined TB a few years ago. But the more I have read about the 400+ and the more I like my Titan and WA, the more I wanted to add a Mesa 400+ to the family , so this past week I traded a Walkabout for a Mesa 400+( though now I have to try and find another WA) so I can also have, from my brief experiences with it, the best tube amp on the planet ...and, for those of you who don't own one, they really are'nt that heavy(Around 42 lbs) unless you put them into a heavy case. I'll report more on my experience with this head next week after it gets here Wednesday. Peace...DAcat

Nice aquisition you got.

Yeah, I hear you on the WA. I had one too and sold it off a year ago to help the wife buy a newer vehicle. I'm still kicking myself for selling that. I'll have to find another one sometime.

I followed that guy from page 1, and have both.

I have to Vote= BOTH!! ;) Yesterday My Mesa Boogie 400+ just arrived and is paired with my Titan V12 via a Morley ABY box so I'm capable of just about every concievable tone I can dream of. Below in the House of Bass ... Left -Right...

Mesa Boogie V12 1200 Watts on top/ Genz Benz Uber 410 4 ohm cab(1000 watts ) + Mesa Boogie 400+ on top / Two 4 ohm EarCandy 212 BassBomb cabs (950 watts each) =:hyper::hyper::D:D Heavenly Tonal Bliss...its gonna take a while to figure all the tonal possibilities but adding the 400+ gives an amazing Punch, Presence and bite to the tone no matter how you color it...I love standing really close to my amps(Just out of the line of fire-and my pants really do flap!!! Peace...DAcat

Drummers fear you. You're my new hero. I think I can hear you over here.

I used a 400+ for over ten years great amp until the tubes (2 of them)started playin up & brought a ampeg cl:) don't no anything about Titan as it has a few too many knobs to fiddle with! Go for the 400+ they sound great & can be run at 2,4&8 ohms which my ampeg can't do
