That is one sweet looking rig. I ended up selling my Mesa head case as my carbine is just easier to carry in the gator rack but man does it ever look cool in the matching case!

I ordered a custom ATA shock unit for the 400+ as well. It's a beast and it deserves a safe home!

Also, first gig w/ the 400+ tonight- does anybody have any tips on using the DI out?? I've heard it gets a tad noisy when you push the amp a little hard. I have my Master on about 2-2.5, and Channel 2 volume at about 4-4.5.
I have a new Heil mic just haven't tested it yet or had time really. :(

The Heil mics are great!
Bring it for backup; send both to the board, and let the sound guy decide which he likes, or, he can even blend them.

I'm going to play tomorrow night at a place we've played before so that shouldn't be an issue w/ the mic.

The gig tonight was kinda last minute and is outta town, so not sure what to expect! But yeah makes sense- I'll set it up and see if he likes what he's getting @ the board and if not I'll throw on the DI.

The DI out is 600ohm line level, at average settings. It is actually a tap on teh output transformer, so if you have any noisy power tubes it will be reflected in the output tone. It can also be quite high level-wise. The best way I have found to use it is to use a crazy string of adapters. First, use an XLR to 1/4" adapter. Then route the 1/4 cable (simple guitar patch is fine we don't need to observe balancing here) to a DI box to change its level to something a PA can deal with from a stage box. Most DI's have no problem knocking Line level down to mic level. However the Mesa line out can be terrifyingly loud if you reeally drive the inputs or have an active bass (STINGRAY+MESA!)so in some cases I would engage the "speaker" switch on my DI. Thats basically a 30db pad. This should get it down to a comfort level for the mixers input.
Alternately you can use the slave out which is post FX loop but pre output transformer. It's also a lower line level (-10db?) AND it has a level control.

How'd the gig go? It only just occurred to me that at all but the largest venues I never needed PA support with my mesa.
I run it at about 2 on teh master and 8 on teh input of channel 2. At 3 on the master I am sterilizing people a block away.

Well we played last night, and the show ended up being terrible b/c the venue was WAY too small inside for how much stuff we had and they were complaining after every song we were too loud (which we weren't- I know how to play and adjust volume) but again it was a last-minute deal and we got invited and more gigs b/c of it (closer to home, thankfully) which just didn't lead to any time really to soundcheck and were having PA issues and I couldn't hear my bass at ALL (even with my rig) but I just kinda made my way through it and we'll have a better gig tonight.
I got compliments on my tone by lots of sober people haha, so that was a good thing. The only person in my band, for sure! So they could at least hear it.

I ran the DI outta my Boogie and made sure they knew it was a little hot to cut back the Gain and I didn't clip the board and apparently was loud enough in the mix to where other people were going "Hey those fills and runs were awesome and your tone just NAILS what your band needs", etc., so wasn't bad. I probably was running the Ch. 2 pre at about 4 and the Master at 2 and just b/c the stage was so crowded and loud I couldn't even hear but I'm all for a good mix so worked fine.

But tonight at our bigger club I may try the DI+Speaker Out trick w/ my Radial JDI tonight. Just have to engage the Pad and Speaker button and works like the Countryman. Which I'd like to get, but a battery in a DI? I guess most everywhere has Phantom power tho... I want to use the Heil but I wanna test it in-house first with our rig to see how it sounds w/ placement, which of the 6 speakers sounds best, etc..

So however, just for general info the 400+'s DI is fine to use from what I've found if you need to!
Imma test w/ that Slave Out method too.

And also, I technically didn't "need" to really run my bass in the mix which after our first few songs I wish they'd just have pulled it out and let me turn up so I could have heard me better, but I'm all about the overall sound nowadays and much rather lower my on stage levels if it helps the FOH. And oh yeah- at Ch. 2 @ 6 and Master @ 3, my guitards just stop playing in rehearsal LOL. :D "Dude turn down!" I'm like "Hey, I'm only on THREE here. Don't make me mad and I have to reach for 3.5!" ;)

It's in here somewhere...

Silver with reddish-brown graphics...the original version with separate inputs for active and passive instruments and no bypass switch on the effects loop (just a switching type jack on the effects return).

Silver with black graphics added a bypass switch for the effects loop at first and later ones ditched one of the input jacks in favor of an passive/active switch and just one input jack.

Black face have the same features of the Silver/black with knobs that hide when pushed.

There may be other differences but I'm not sure.

They all sound awesome!!!!!

So the thought of replacing my 700rbii with an M6 has been happening over and over again in my mind. I play into a powerhouse 1x12 and maybe a second if our shows start getting bigger. I like the 700rb, but the all Mesa idea is just so good sounding. Anyone ever compare these two heads? I figure they're in the same tonal ball park, but any specifics?

My 400+ was being a little weird last night... We'd started playing and the volume wasn't really pushing through. My NS5 is in the shop so I was rocking the Brooklyn NS2, and after the first song the volume would drop and then pop back up, etc.. I probably just didn't give it enough time to warm up, though. Unfortunately that's always something Imma have to deal with when we play live and why I always hustle my gear in there and turn the amp on ASAP. :hmm:
Sounds incredible still but eh. I'm still a total nuub when it comes to tubes after 13 years of playing, so any little hiccup like that just sets me off into panic mode!:D:hiding:
