Yeah my guitarist always complains I am too loud when my amp is in the zone. But then he is way too loud and freakin deaf!
#1 You can get JJ teslas anywhere. They are cheap and plentiful. RCA and Valco are expensive and rare. I come across mine in the back of abandoned TV sets and other old consumer gear. It helps to live next to a no mans land that people use to dump stuff!
NOS RCA 12ax7a can go for $40-75 thanks to the hifi guys.
They are pretty damn smooth though.
Raytheon tubes are good as well as any Phillips tube you can find.

Yes, I'm trying to post from the blackberry. I'll post from the laptop tomorrow. When I close the attachment window I lose the picture. It's my Mesa Pulse 600 with my Fender Custom Shop 64.

Hi there new to Mesa, just got a Bass 400 (non +) may I please have a number? Instagator (or anyone else familiar with the 400) - is that a 2 Ohm load you have on your 400 in that pict? How long have you done that for? Every had any problems doing that? What tubes do you use? How often do you change them? Thanks!

Question for all you mesa powerhouse users. What do you guys think of the 4x10 powerhouse cab??
I loved my Powerhouse cabs, (410, 210, 115), but found I loved Genz Benz's Uber cabs even more. (can I say that in this thread?)

It depends. If we're talking 10" driver-equipped cabs, there are better out there IME. I'm not a big 410 fan anyway, but yeah. They're alright, nothing earth-shattering. Their 610 though and 412 are just t!ts for me.
I really dig the Powerhouse 212 which is the same format as the 410, except lighter and better sounding (IMO).

I'm going back and forth about getting 2x of those or just a PH412 again. Tough call.
That is an easy call... for me. I like being able to carry/lift a 212 by myself and I find that a single 212 will cover most the gigs I get these days. Besides, when you stack 2 of them, it's still the Tower of Thor!
I would be careful with 2 ohm loads on the bass 400. If your amp doesnt have 2 ohm jacks, just dont do it!
It should get painfully loud with just an 8x10.

Some of the later 400 were rated for 2 ohms. Most weren't.
If yours isn't labeled that way at the jacks, I sure wouldn't do it.

Thank you for the advice Chef, however, if I am reading this correctly, it seems as if I am free to do so. Do you concur? From the Mesa/Boogie Bass 400 Manual:
"SPEAKER JACKS
Two 4 Ohm and two 8 ohm jacks are provided. Unlike transistor amplifiers, the Bass 400 will provide full power at both 4 and 8 Ohms. Furthermore, speaker impedance mis-matching is not critical and perceived loss of power will be minimal. When using more than one speaker cabinet, remember that the total load impedance goes down as more cabinets are hooked up. For example, if you use one 8 Ohm cabinet, use one of the 8 Ohm speaker jacks. But if you use two 8 Ohm speaker cabinets, they will be operating in parallel and the total load will be 4 Ohms. Therefore, plug each cabinet into a 4 Ohm jack.
If you want to use two 2X15 cabinets were each individual speaker is rated at 8 Ohms, the best results will be achieved by wiring the speakers inside each box in series. Then each cabinet will become 16 Ohms and each cabinet should be plugged into an 8 Ohm jacks. But if this seems too complex, do not despair! Some of the heaviest players of the Bass 400 (Michael Anthony, Juan Crocier) use pairs of our standard wired 2x15 cabs, each plugged into a 4 Ohm jack."
The way I do math it seems as if this is saying that each 2X15 cab is 4 Ohms for a total load between the two of 2 Ohms. It really shouldn't be any different between a 4 Ohm 8X10 and a 4 Ohm 2X15 paired together instead of two 2X15s right? Thanks all for helping me through this! Cheers.

I believe the manual is saying "if you use two 8 ohm cabs, this makes a 4 ohm load, so, use the 4 ohm jacks."
I don't see where that ever says a 2 ohm load is acceptable.
