Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

FWIW ..... Randall and the good folks at Mesa Boogie are coming out with a series of pedals soon (if they have not actually hit the market already). I believe they are all guitar oriented distortion/overdrive type pedals, but hey, you never know, if they are in a pedal making mood, and Mesa hears that there is interest in the bass community about this idea (i.e. a WA preamp type pedal), maybe we would see one out in the wild sometime in our lifetimes.

As long as they actually got it right and used both tubes run hot instead of the Mpulse 600 setup! I'd probably even prefer such a setup to an all inclusive 900 watt Walkabout just for versatility reasons, though you can still put me on the list for a 900 watt Walkabout either way! I guess it would be quite a bit to ask to squeeze all that EQ into a practically-sized preamp anyway.

My understanding, from a previous WA megathread, was 500 watts @ 2.6 ohms, and closer to 550 watts @ 2 ohms. I have nothing to back this up with, but I will say, the WA through a pair of 4 ohm 2x12's will be a force of nature, whatever the wattage.

I know we all know this, but more cabs is the best way to get louder with this, and almost any, amp. I have used this amp with 0-3 Ampeg act-210av cabs. 1 is a great stage monitor. It can actually be heard by the soundman all by itself. 2 is considerably louder. 3 may gain just a touch more volume, but also brings in headroom out of these little cabs when you really need in a prett loud stage volume situation. The whole room hears the growly goodness. It complements what is coming out of the mains well since it isn't boomy. My best rig so far. First time in history that three house sound guys have all used the term "perfect" after about 10 seconds of level/sound checking. Honestly, 2 is enough. This thing has tons of power below 4 ohms.

I got Jim C's walkabout. I've gigged it twice with a Thunderchild 15. Once in an 80 seat club and once in a 200 seat. You guys must play really loud.:bassist::eek::D

And why doesn't every bass amp come with this EQ section?

I did some power output tests on the WA:

Even at 2 ohms 2% distortion and 1 Khz input wave it only got to 484W RMS.

2.6 figures were really good at 442W RMS.

The problem with running 1 - 4 ohm cab with a 8 ohm underneath it is the 4 ohm cab will end up taking 2/3's the power and only 1/3 will get to the extension cab.

In practical use this means your volume will be limited by the combo's 4 ohm driver and the extension would have more potential but not be used. It's just a little less efficient however, it may not matter to you because you will indeed notice a volume increase adding that 8 ohm extra driver.

Thanks, I'll take a look at the link! So you'd recommend I just run a 4 ohm extension then?
