Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

Thinking about getting a Walkabout and wondering if anyone is using 3015 (non-lf) drivers with one. I have a couple homemade cabs similar to, but slightly larger volume than TL606s with the 3015s in them. Currently using a Carvin B1500 but looking to loose weight and improve tone. I never turn the B1500 up past 12:00 but thats still a lot of watts. I like a vintagey tone but don't want to forsake the ability to sling some lows when needed. Love all the talk about the WA tone here but will the WA be able to keep up with a loud drummer with a couple of these 15s?

Just received my Mike Arnopol fEarful Bassic composite 15 (what a mouthful). Spent about 1/2 hour noodling through it with my Walkabout and Chef's old orange Lakland P5. What a party! It's old school city:p The cab weighs under 25 lbs and feels almost the same weight as the head in it's aluminum lid. It's a single Faital 400 watt 15 in a composite box, ported/tuned pretty low, 4 Ohms. It feels like a toy:hyper:

Mike advised me to choose the Faital as the 3015LF has squat for mids, and I told him I'd be fine with mids up to about 1.5KHz. This rig is all about low mids, bump and grind. Slappers, tappers and the like need not apply. I'm pushing mids at 1200 and 200 Hz and it's so deep and throaty it's hard to believe. At 4 Ohms it's as loud as a 4 Ohm Scout 15 but not tuned quite as low (less boom to eq out) and weighs substantially less than a Scout 12 ext cab, has 2 recessed side handles but is pretty shallow and is an easy 1-hander.

So far my impression is true love, but I must say the pair is a 1-trick pony. That'll work well for my needs, but if I was a "real" bassist looking for versatility, this cab wouldn't fly. Think blues and rock:cool: 2 of these would easily cover my gigs for volume, with the Walkabout on top, but my M9/LDS 15-6 rig ain't broke.....so I won't fix it. This new pair will be great whenever I wanna travel uber light, and will easily fill a small room.

Yeah-from what I understand, Chef's recipes require a tweeter or at least reasonable content to 4kHz, and this won't deliver that. However, that Nordy-equipped Lakland P>>WA>>Bassic is like 3 1-trick ponies doing the same amazing trick......chocolate sauce on top of chocolate icing on top of chocolate cake:p

hey y'all,
i wrestle with roomBoom at my church quite a bit (large echo-y room) but soon i'll be playing a gig outside! it's a fairly small affair so i'll use a single walkabout scout 12.

my question is about EQ-ing in this outdoor situation. i guess ~50 hz boom won't be a prob? are there other trouble-areas? do stages give boom?

The Walkabout is one amp I can't remember ever having a "room-boom" problem with.
It's eq is very sculptable

well, I don't know about that. I truly love my WA, and have used it in a number of configs over the past 5 years (1x12, 2x1x12, 1x12+1x15 all scout, and then other a few other cabs too), but they can get a bit bloomy in the low end (the 15 moreso than the 12, but still ...) if you do not watch how much you push the bass freq's. I feel like the passive radiator cabs are specifically tuned to produce a lot of low end for the box size and that can get some users into boom 'n bloom trouble.

I do totally agree that the WA EQ section offers as much control as should be needed to tame any EQ issue that I can think of.

I have used my 2 gen (?) WA 1x12 combo (silver/black, single input with active/passive switch) steadily for the past 5-6 years (between 4-8 gigs per month plus 2 rehearsals per week). It's the 4 ohm 1x12, and I use it about 70% standalone, and 30% @ 2ohms with a 4ohm 1x12 Scout extension cab. Never had an issue with using it at 2 ohms.

With any piece of working gear, it has been bumped along many a sidewalk and driveway in/out of gigs. I use the Mesa "tone luggage" rack thing, and it has been bumped/clunked around pretty good on occasion.

I've never had an issue with it working, but it certainly feels to me like I am having to push the master up more and more to the final level I want (and the gigs have not changed a great deal, so the volume demands are not increasing that I can think of).

So, is it possible that I have worn out the preamp tubes on this amp perhaps ? Is there something else I should consider ?
