Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

So, I have a second backup WA on it's way to me. I decided to use my WA combo at home and use the second WA as my primary head at the rehearsal space. Also, I am in the market for a 500 watt micro of some kind that I might find similar to the WA... more similar than the Genz SL600 I've decide to sell.

Any suggestions? First on my list is an LMTube500. I'd like to try that one... cool features, and it's class A/B.

How many walkabout owners also have an all tube head? I know it has an amazing tube tone for a hybrid but is it enough? Anyone sold an all tube and got a walkabout.

I'd like to get an all tube but I feel like it would replace the walkabout at what it does best. Pretty sure I'd regret selling it...

Completely different topic. I have been reading about how pairing two different cabs is not a great thing to do (technical explanations are abundant here on TB). Nearly a year ago, prior to all my cab learning, I picked up a 15" Scout cab to go with my 12" WA combo. Sounds good and certainly louder than either cab separately (running at 2 ohms, both cabs are 4 ohms) but I'm wondering if I'm missing something here. Folks talk about how pairing two different cabs can create problems as the speakers are out of phase with one another, leading to reduced volume at specific frequencies. Not sure if I am experiencing this, but balancing volume between different strings/areas of the neck is tricky. I reckoned this was due to my bass or lack of desire to mess much with EQ, but perhaps the cab combination is the issue.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried pairing a 12 & 15 together?

Update report on my Walkabout: the volume was fading in and out. I called Mesa/Boogie and the tech told me that, when they upgraded mine the first time, along with changing the two inputs to one input with a passive/active switch, they added an effects loop bypass toggle. Sure enough, there was an unlabeled mini-toggle on the back panel of the head. Tonight we had a reunion of our old dance hall band, and I took the Walkabout to the party, carefully changing the switch from where I got the fade-in/-out to the opposite position. Three hours of loud, hard rockin' playing later, I can report that the problem is solved.

Lordy, what an amp!

Out of phase with each other is really easy to check.
Put a 9v batterry to the speaker leads on both, making sure you have the same terminals going to same parts of the cable,

watch for the speaker to move either in, or, out

both should move the same direction


I ran Scout 12 over Scout (and diesel) 15 for a long time.

It works great, IMO.

simply running a cable in and out of those jacks a few times should cure that.
try, and put the switch back in the other position and see...

I doubt what you're describing is related to phasing or cab mismatch in general, unless it's only occurring in some areas of the room and not others, or is resulting in a complete loss of lows. I ran Scout 12 on a 15 for a bit and it sounded great (stacked vertically), but the 15 was a PITA to lug.

I had an Ampeg V4BH, and a Mesa Buster, both all-tube heads. Also had Walkabout at the same time. Sold both tube amps, kept Walkabout.
