Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread 8

I've noticed that some WA's have different ranges on the second and third EQ controls. Some have 200-1.2K-2k, 1.2k-6.8k-12k (my black/silver) while others have 200-340-2k, 1.2k-2k-12k. I thought it was just the newer ones, but today I noticed the second version on emblymouse's brown/silver (which has the upgrades) in the classifieds. Just wondering why.

I sold my 400+ soon before buying my first Walkabout, and sold a D-180 not long after. I wouldn't say that a Walkabout really can "replace" an all-tube head, but I can say that it can easily hang with both of those heads and is the main reason I haven't picked up another since. I definitely find the Walkabout far more consistent tonally than any tube head I've ever owned, which is a huge plus, not to mention the huge size/weight benefit!

i finally got a chance to try my carefully chosen rig in a live setting at least at a decent volume.
i have a walkabout head going thru 2 EA CXL 1 12 cabs (8 ohms). here are my thoughts...
i was running the WA at about half and half volume-wise and we were playing plenty loud. i was quite able to fill that room without PA support.
these cabs are very efficient and i thought that they would have been a little louder than they were, but then again, i had enough juice, and what juice it was...
i ran my dingwalls thru it and they sounded perfect; especially the Super P.
what was interesting was that i had more than enough high end -i probably could turn the tweeters off in those cabs.
awesome set up and fairly portable too.

I have a walkabout as a backup to my Buster 200.... :p

However, they are very different tone-wise.

Folks talk about how pairing two different cabs can create problems as the speakers are out of phase with one another, leading to reduced volume at specific frequencies. I reckoned this was due to my bass or lack of desire to mess much with EQ, but perhaps the cab combination is the issue.

Any thoughts? Has anyone tried pairing a 12 & 15 together?

Thanks to all for the responses to my question. I'm happy not to be compelled to search for new cabs. I'd rather spend my time playing!:bassist:

I JUST did the same thing... Second walkabout just got here. First one goes back in the 4 ohm scout, second one gets an aluminum head case.

Aguilar TH500 also headed here on a big brown truck. :D If I dig it... should make for a nice backup/main amp for my loudest gigs. If not, it gets traded for an Orange BT500.

If the Aguilar doesn't suit your tastes, you might want to consider the Gallien Krueger MB Fusion (I tried out the Aguilar TH500 and I found it to be a little sterile sounding—just my opinion). I'm a Walkabout owner/user/fanatic, and let me tell you, I wouldn't hesitate to use the MB Fusion on a gig—it sounds AMAZING! Three tubes in the preamp section, a killer EQ, and two foot switchable channels... what more can you ask for?

I bought it mainly as a backup for my Mesa as well as something that I can easily slip into my gig bag for rehearsals (the Fusion weighs a tad over 4lbs) since I travel to and from rehearsal on the subway. I can't say enough good things about this little monster. Do yourself a favor and check it out.

The MBFusion is a great head, and, the one I use the most.
I use it more than the Walkabout, actually.

However, it doesn't sound very much like the Walkabout, fwiw.

Cool, thanks for the heads up! I can borrow an MBfusion from my local shop actually... I should A/B it with the TH500.

I never considered GK's, mostly because of the stereotype regarding the tone being super bright and ganky. (also my very brief experience with an unknown GK long ago) I'm sure that's all hogwash by now.

My Walkabout on top of the cab I'm not quite done with. I have a couple of aesthetics to finish and order a grill. I'll post pics when I'm done. ;)

Wonderful pair they make though. :)

Just throwing a few options that I think would do well in replacement of the stock fan. I'll be purchasing one of these very soon.
