Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

What are you guys using to connect the Walkabout head to ext.cabs?

The Scout has those 1/4 male 90 degree metal plugs... (not sure what these are properly called) which is fine while the head is docked. What about an ext.cab though?

Am I correct in assuming heavier gauge and shorter run is better?

I made up a pair of 14awg cables about 3' long. One goes from the WA to one speaker, the other connects the speakers. I can stack 'em or spread 'em out.

That's about what I'm gathering.

I recently bought a second Walkabout from another TB'r who'd just had these same upgrades done. $150 is right in line given he lived close enough to drop off and pick up in person. (hat tip BassManPatsFan)

I plan to use this head while mine is in the shop being updated, after that, maybe look into other uses... awesome home practice rig, maybe trading stock. Or heck, just to have a backup.

I wonder if there is a Y adapter made that you could signal two Walkabout amps with one bass...? Hmm.

I do this with a "Y" splitter, or use one of the stereo outs from my Chorus or Fission pedals, works great and doubles the fun. 2 Walkabouts and 2 Fearless F112's, covers about all I do.

get some of this!!

at 1 time it was, actually working on building it again.
its 2 8ohm combos and 2 8ohm radiators :bassist:

really sweet because i could handle any gig with this, from small dbl bass gigs to big outdoor gigs!!
component rigs are pretty dope

one time i ran the 2 bottom cabs w/ 1 head and eq'd in a little more boom and eq'd the top two boxes with the other head and added some mid punch!!
it was all good and honestly even on the bigger gigs, not that taxing.

That's awesome man. I'm really starting to get how versatile the modular WA/S can be... I needed one amp to do it all - URB, BG, & ABG. For 90% of the time, just the combo is plenty, then I discovered extension cabs. :D

fx send from head one, to fx return on head two
done.

Bumping this suggestion from a few days ago: I'm going to play with this some tonight, having just taken delivery of this second WA head this afternoon. It came a day early! :) (UPS trying to beat the Winter storm I guess)

So by running fx send from amp 1 to fx return on amp 2, does that makes amp 2 a "slave" amp? (I might be totally blowing the terminology)

Input gain on amp 2 at zip?

Operationally, the master volume on amp 2 set at noon or less, and total volume controlled by amp 1?

Question for you guy's....

I have a WA Scout 4 ohm 12".

If I add the 12" 8 ohm extension cab, won't I get unequal volume through each? (ie: lower output from the 8 ohm). Not worried about the 8/4 load on the head, already hunted down those threads...!).

I just want more volume for larger venues and don't want to part with the Scout. But the ohm mixing of the cabinets concerns me with respect to volume from each. Is it noticeable?

Yeah, you'll have to listen to the 4 ohm one for overexcursion or compression as it will hit that point first. There will be a slight volume difference but it will still work... It's just not ideal.

The way the Mesa topology is set, the Master Volume comes before the FX loop, so by plugging amp 1 into the FX Return of amp 2 you are actually bypassing the Master Volume of amp 2 completely and all volume control will come from amp 1.

You could try getting an XLR to 1/4" cable and use the DI output of amp 1 into the FX Return of amp 2. Then you could use the DI Level control of amp 1 to control volume of amp 2. I think the DI of amp 2 will still work with that setup (though I could be wrong).

I played around with this for a while... and there's obviously some part I'm missing.

Running combo/amp 2 in the fx loop works but disengages the speaker in combo/amp 1. Bypassing the fx loop (with the switch on amp 1) gets you both cabs but they sound thin and weak together. The older of these two heads doesn't have a fx bypass switch, and I suspect therein lies at least one problem.

I think the XLR - 1/4" plug to DI plan would work, but splitting the signal from one bass and sending to two amps eq'd differently would get me closer to what I going for. It was just a crazy idea... I can't imagine any gig I'd ever need to run two heads anyway.:p

The simple goal here was just to have a backup Walkabout while the older one goes back to MB for current upgrades. After that, maybe I'll look at trading gear. Maybe pairing a couple really nice same-same 8ohm cabs with one WA, and leave the other WA docked in the 4ohm Scout combo cab for the small-room bar gigs or recording sessions.

Think I'll plug up and play some more. :D

@bobalu:

Re: running the 4 & 8 ohm Scout cabs together - these guys expertise is way beyond this noob's, but I couldn't tell any volume difference. It sounds absolutely beautiful whether stacked or tandem.

If its a series fx loop (i think it is) then you have to return the signal to get amp one to sound. If you get a 50/50 blend box made, you should be able to crosslink the amps and have two channels that each feed both amp sections.
