Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

The large mesh dust cap with the silver center is likely the 8 ohm driver. The other one you described is the 4 ohm based on the Eminence 2512 Deltalite II

Yeah... the second one I described is marked 4 ohm on the back of the cab. I'm pretty sure about *it*, but the older of the two that I had incorrectly presumed was what my WalkAbout came in, still got some homework to do. Part of the story of it's history doesn't add up. I wonder now if an amp and cab got switched once upon a late-nite load out.

There's so many threads on preferences and comparisons between WalkAbout Scout 4's & 8's... I've got a lot of reading to do before the pros and cons lead me. What I've got right now - in an A/B test - I can't tell any difference at all.

scout in this case

but, I'd stand with about anything:
Epi UL410 8 ohm v 4 ohm
GK Neo 212 8 ohm v 4 ohm

as long as "they're same/same with the exception of ohms."

go try a few and report back.

I compared a Walkabout 12 4ohm combo to an 8 ohm extension cab in a store a few years ago. I was actually blown away at the time because the 4 ohm combo cab sounded a lot better then the 8 ohm extension cab in a direct side by side comparison. The 4 ohm cab was punchier, louder and seemed to simply have more of everything. The 8 ohm cab was ok but seemed to fart out easily and just didn't have the same mojo.

I know that sounds silly in may ways but at the time, I was really surprised and disappointed because I was planning to buy the extension cab.

I now own a pair of 4 ohm Scout extension cabs and they sound great and make an amazing sounding rig with my Walkabout head. The 2 ohm operation has never been an issue.

"So," I said to Santa "what I need this year, is an 8ohm replacement speaker for my Scout cab from them fine elves out in Petaluma... and if you can swing it, I'd like to have the inputs on my WalkAbout amp upgraded. Anytime before Spring will do... you know, during the dry season." :p

Tasty. Very tasty. ImageUploadedByTalkBass1385849395.931907.jpg

Yessir; cap'd shut. It was only there for the photo, it moved to the floor next to me for the duration.

1972 Tele, Hammond DarkStar pickup, LaBella black tapes.

So, I haven't had a good chance to give the scout a good tryout until today and, I am pretty sure the speaker is blown. I am getting a fuzz like effect when I play lower notes at higher volumes (regardless of gain settings) that does not happen with a different cab.

Called the GC I bought it from and they are telling me that my only option is to take it into my local GC... An hour and a half away. Oh and they added "sounded great in the store!"

I sent Mesa an email to see if I might have any of the transferable warranty left (I believe that this could have been a store demo as aesthetically it is perfect and still had all the hang tags on it) and it appears to be the latest revision (blackface). In the meantime the head sounds great through my PH 212. Worse case scenario I will have to make the drive to GC but all things considered I am not too bummed. Got the combo for ~770 out the door so I got a good deal regardless.

It could be an 8 year old store demo, but if it's never been sold, its "new" in terms of the warranty. Did you get the packet with the owners manual, stickers and warranty card?
If not, ask them what they did with it.

You may just be hitting the limits of the cab if it is only farting at loud volumes on the lowest notes. Try cutting some of the 30-35hz range with the lowest parametric band on the amp. I am able to make my Scout cab fart out pretty easily if I hit it with a super bassy signal. The 300 watt power handling they claim for the Scout cab is pretty much the peak of power handling, and the speaker will start getting unhappy way before that point with a really bass-heavy signal.
