Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Oooops, meant to add a pic:

Hmmm. Before I get too far ahead, is there any way to know what impedance speaker is in my Scout combo cab?

It *is* an older one... though I don't know how old. (the amp serial number is 0008XX) and as I said, I'm only *assuming* Mesa put an 8 ohm speaker in it because that's what the outputs on the docked amp are marked as.

4 Ohm is the standard and 8 is a special order. It may be marked somewhere on the cone itself or on the backplate of the combo.

Has anyone ever compared a Walkabout head to the TH500? I'm wondering if they sound more alike than different, tonally speaking.

I did a shootout between the WA, TH500 and orange TB500. It has clips between the WA and TH where listeners could not tell the dif between the two. I could get my WA to sound almost the same as the TH, but not so much the other way around... from what I remember.

Fwiw.. I gig both for a year and found the two heads felt quite different on the gig, despite their similarities in a listening environment.

Thank lomo... I'll have to pull the speaker and check I guess, as there isn't anything marked on the cab itself. I suspect there *was* a sticker on the speaker plug identifying it, but if so, all that's left is gummy residue.

Looking at MB's store page, they show a 12" 8 ohm Neobdynium (sp.) for Scout cabs, for $119. Didn't see a 4 ohm for Scout.

Hi all - soon to be a new owner of a Walkabout! I've searched thru the TB threads and while I find posts about the Mesa bag, I haven't found much about alternatives. Anyone using a Gator or other readily-available bag to transport their amp head? Not interested in going the rackmount route....

Interesting as I had the WA and TH500 at the same time.
They were 2 different amps for me and I liked the tone of the WA best. It also sat better in the mix. I ended up selling the WA due to lack of power and the TH500 as not the right tone.

Both are killer amps.

The original owner of my WA/S doesn't remember if he ordered it with a 4ohm or 8ohm cab. I called MB a few minutes ago and left a message... I'm hoping they can run my serial number and tell me fo' sho'.

Thanks for the advice fellas. The expertise here is much appreciated.

the only way to know for sure is to pull the speaker and see how it's labeled.
it could have been replaced during the combos lifetime.

True, and that's this evenings project, though I have the benefit of knowing the guy who bought it new and the guy who ordered it for him. According to them, it hasn't been changed.

Part of what worries me is that they ordered it expressly with the idea of running an ext. cab with the combo... which makes me think they probably ordered it with the 8ohm rather than the standard 4ohm. Will update...

Thanks. I guessed right on which one was the TH500. If that was the WA set flat, it sounded alot sweeter to me. I own a TH500, and tried your settings with a Greenboy Bassic, 4 ohm Faital. Not the same really, and I wound up getting quite a bit different eq setting to get to what I remember of your clip. Cool stuff, but, if the WA can cut my little Blues gig, I might switch. BTW, if anyone has a WA and is thinking about getting a TH500, I'd be glad to do a swap with you, if only just to see if either one of us likes the TH500/WA. PM me if interested.

Well... the plot thickens. The short of it is, my WA left Petaluma as a rack mount head, not in a Scout cab, and I still don't know what the speaker impedance is as currently mounted.

By the way, though it's often said here on the MT that Mesa's customer service is top-notch, it bears repeating. As we say here in Virginia, them's fine folks.:thumbup: One way or another, I'll be doing some business with them as soon as I figure out what I need.

So examining the speakers in these two different Scout cabs, they are completely different in design. The older one has an aluminum bullet shaped center with a mesh cover, and the reverse has a crown symbol. The newer one has a small quarter-sized mesh over the center. The mounting hardware and harnesses all appear the same. The speakers don't look like they've obviously been changed. Nowhere on either could I find any impedance reference.

I've got a guitar playing bud with a multi-meter... that's the next step.

Got a turkey to baste... you guys have a nice Thanksgiving!
