Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I´m quite new with a WA15 and I´m really loving it. Yesterday a secondhand 15 extension cab showed up locally and I´m thinking maybe I should grab it, but I´m not sure I really need it as the WA15 is plenty loud; what do you guys think; is a WA 15 + 15 something to love?
2 WA/Scout 15's will sound good, but it really depends on what your needs are.
I used to run a WA 12 + scout 15 rig. It's pretty cool what you can do with the adjustable tweeters on these cabs.
I also always felt that the 15 handled the WA power better/more fully than the 12 could.

I think a 12 + 15 is an even better combo. Sit the amp atop the 12 stacked on the 15 and run 3 & 5ft extension cables w/ couplers to the amp or find an elusive WA head case (or build your own) so the amp aint so naked. The 12 cab to my ears has a tighter punch and all around range than the 15. The 15 is super excellent and def no slouch but the amp and 4ohm 12cab is just pretty much an immaculate conception of a combo. Heres my setup below: newer vented blackface with 4ohm 12cab + 4ohm 15 extension on bottom (w/ cover on it), & after a pretty extensive search headcase found from excellent Aussie TB’er @rodl2005 (sorry for the dark photo). I dont use the 15 a ton but its nice to have for extra support. If im leaving the house ill pack the amp in the back of the 12 for portability’s sake. Also, welcome @bebi! The Mesaverse is a pretty cool place to make sound waves and some of the folks in this thread have a century+ of collective knowledge on everything Mesa you could evervwant to know.

Thanks all guys for your comments on my WA15+15 question. The WA extension cabs are very rare here in my parts. The 15 I am looking at is the first one I´ve seen on the market the last years actually. So I have never seen a 12.
Even buying my WA15 combo was not so easy; none left in Scandinavia...so it came from Germany. Brand new. Tried to find a used one here for a long time. Only got one reply; and he ended up not wanting to sell it after he spent some time with it when I asked him to give it a checkup :-(
The 15 cab will be mine sometime over New Year I guess, as the owner is taking it to town after his christmas holiday back home from somewhere up north....

I think you made a great investment.

Hello to all.

As I wrote some time ago I had problems with the letters that came away, so I decided to order a replacement faceplate. A great after-sales assistance send me the new one here in Italy in about 60 days.

In the meantime, however, I had problems with the amp section, distorted sound even at low volumes.

So (being out of warranty) I decided to send the head to Enrico Santagati (the owner of A.T.S. Italy) for a repair. After identifying the problem (mosfets) and repair costs, we decided for a radical solution: replace the power amp with class D one with about 850 watts!

We have also re-engraved the old front panel and here is the result:

I am an architect, not an engineer, so I do not know all details, I only know that Walkabout arrived yesterday and from what I saw from a quick test the result is great.

I also changed the DI out, now independent of the master and total weight fell to 3.73 kg.

I can not wait to test it live, I'll let you know...

Wow! That looks great!!

Many people have been asking for this and it seemed like an impossibility, but here it is!

Now it just has to sound as good. Let us know. Thanks.

Aside from jokes, I’m amazed. Such a great mod, it seems to answer many of the requests of a wa tone with a contemporary power rating. Yes, the mosfets are an integral part of the tone, but for some users the potential tradeoff may be acceptable. And it’s light too. Likely, it will not need a massive cooling, so the fan can be downscaled or kept turning slower with the advantage of less noise, ideal for studio work. The DI output, not affected by the master knob is super cool. Now I am craving of hearing it in action and want/need a review. Please keep us updated. I live in Italy and very interested.

^^^^^^WANT.....but what does it sound like without the 2nd tube/Mosfets?
It looks great, but my gut is telling me that if Mesa and agedhorse couldn't get us there, it seems unlikely that we have anything more here than a good sounding cosmetically similar imitation. Of course a similar quirk of fate in the design (or in this case re-design) process could have yielded another crazy success...although I'm not holding my breath.

Anyone using their Walkabout in a 8ohm 1x12 + 4ohm 2x12 cab config ?
I am considering going with a 3x12 arrangement by adding a Berg CN112 to my current CN212, but I am wondering how well it would work with mixed ohms cabs.
The goal is to get as many drivers going as I can with the Walkabouts 300 watts.

anyone doing this (I'm sure some are) .. and how is it working out ?

oh, and Merry Christmas

I see that @pfschim and @NoFiller have used a WA 12 and 15 cabs together. Anyone else use this combo?
I have a WA12 4 ohm. There's an ad on CL for a WA15 8 ohm combo minus the amp. A couple of questions:

Are there any issues with using a combo cab without the amp in it?
Wouldn't I be better with both being 8 ohm or the 15 being 4 ohm and the 12 being 8 ohm?

Any other comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Dave
