Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Hello! I just registered on Talkbass tonight. Finding this thread led me to buy a Walkabout without even trying one. I bought a new 12" Walkabout Combo on April 24, 2019 and registered for the 5 year warranty. I did not register or make a post until I had read the ENTIRE thread back from the very beginning, and I mean read, follow links, see the EQ graphs, Chef playing live, etc. I just listened to the Tom Bowlus / Andy Field interview today. The purchase of a very fine bass in February led me to start looking for an amp that would do it justice. I looked at used/new and read many reviews on about 20 different set-ups, then I saw a discontinued (and price reduced) Walkabout at Long and McQuade. I know Mesa Boogie guitar amps and their quality, so I Googled the Walkabout and found this page. I already have some stories similar to many on here about the DI reactions and overall wows! Thank You so much for all the info and leading me to this fine product and knowing how to set it up!View attachment 3460076 View attachment 3460072 View attachment 3460079

Yea man, that is alright! Welcome to Boogie Wonderland.

Saw an interesting Walkabout/cab listing on Ebay today. Sounds like a great deal. But I'm trying to make sense about the scout speaker in the Subway cab (in the description). Wondering if this was a prototype or something at mesa. Check it out if it is still up when you see this.

Also - just wanted to gush on my Walkabout 15" combo a bit! I use it live rarely and in generally pretty small venues or quiet gigs, but last weekend I used it in a big warehouse in a loud project and it performed perfectly. There was a fairly robust PA and soundguy, but the monitoring was a mess and cut in and out during the set. The project is very bassy with sequenced synths that pretty much dominated the monitoring we had to keep us in time, but the Walkabout really pulled me through hearing myself and there were several comments on the great tone (taken via the DI). Great amp as always!

I mean it claims that it is a rehoused Scout speaker, so I don't see any reason to infer that it was a Mesa prototype. Lots of possible explanations, though if it was an intentional attempt to lose weight or improve performance somehow then the stock Subway cab was probably better to begin with. I would guess it was an attempt to squeeze more watts out of the Subway cab since I don't think they offered those in 4 ohms (wisely since few single full-range 12s could handle anything like the power a Subway could put out at 4 ohms)

Perhaps the guy had a 12” Subway cab, blew the driver, and put in the driver from a 12” Scout he has laying around.

Or maybe as you suggested, wanted to put in 4 ohm driver into the Subway cab and a 4 ohm Scout driver was handy.

Either way, I have a hard time believing a Scout driver in a Subway cab, even with the added 3dB of Walkabout power, would sound better than a stock Subway cab.

I'm not even sure what the guy is talking about, but I don't think the Scout speaker would be a good fit in the Subway cabinet, in fact I don't think it would be close. It was made to work with a passive radiator so the tuning should be quite far off (though I don't have the data or haven't tested)

You could ask if he has the original Subway driver and include it.
The difference, even accounting for the 4 ohms of the Scout driver is almost certain that the original Subway driver would be louder and have a deeper low end extension.

Hey guys, I need to move a few pieces to pay off a new bass and cab. Up for sale is my Mesa Scout 15 cabinet.

Now having a new issue with my WA head. Last two gigs sounded horrible, so I set everything up in my garage to see what I see. When you first power it up, after the relay clicks on, you see all the speakers move out about 5-6mm and stay out in that position. Yeah it sounds like crap that way. Then when you power off, the speakers return back to their idle positon. Didn't matter which cab I tried.
Yes, going to call Mesa tech line about it, but sounds like DC leaking in.

Do not continue using your amp this way, you can damage the speakers. It needs to see a QUALIFIED service tech.

Thanks. Yup, I wont be using it. I was suprised it didn't ruin the cab from the last gig that way. I fired up my Mesa Bass 400 and tested my cabs to make sure they're still okay...got lucky!
