Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Could be that the tweeter is damaged, or something electronic is being reproduced by the tweeter.

Well it took a day or so but I figured it out. It was something electronic vibrating in the amp afterall. When it was making the rattle sound, I got it to stop by picking up the jack-side corner of the amp. Then I checked the tubes and the socket under V2 is a little loose. The socket itself seems to have some play, not the tube within it. Is this broken or something I can fix?

This is what a good tech should be able to fix fairly easily. They should also check for additional issues before they become problematic.

Have you tried swapping out tubes one at a time to see if it’s a tube issue? I’ve had noise issues in a Walkabout before that went away by swapping out a tube (v1 in my case).

I was about to purchase a WA scout 15" locally after playing it briefly over this past weekend. It was in great shape, little wear and tear, and the seller said it had given zero problems.

However, the amp would cutout, with the master was set to 0, while gain was maxed, and then slowly raising the master vol.

Not that this is a usual setup, none the less it seemed to be an issue.
Does anyone have an idea why this occurs ?

Sounds like it needs servicing. Factory service is available for this amp (especially since you are in the Bay Area) , but depending on where you are, there are a some authorized service centers that would also be a good choice.

Very much appreciate the reply.

Yes, Petaluma is close by. But, given the cost of additional service and repair I'm afraid what the seller is asking is just not reasonable.

Anyone with a walkabout scout they'd be willing to sell. PM me please. :)

Your red Kustom amp is so cool!

Thank you Leo,
I love the look. I built a 4x8 neo cab to fit inside the bottom shell, but as expected it lacks low end. Have another cab to fit that I haven't cut for speakers yet, future project. I'm thinking abt putting a WA head in the headshell too. The little ampeg b2 lacks some balls, but the combo sounds good with elec piano as is.

Thanks to forum member moreblues I've acquired a very nice walkabout sans scout cab and the gain controls work as expected on this one.

Hello! I just registered on Talkbass tonight. Finding this thread led me to buy a Walkabout without even trying one. I bought a new 12" Walkabout Combo on April 24, 2019 and registered for the 5 year warranty. I did not register or make a post until I had read the ENTIRE thread back from the very beginning, and I mean read, follow links, see the EQ graphs, Chef playing live, etc. I just listened to the Tom Bowlus / Andy Field interview today. The purchase of a very fine bass in February led me to start looking for an amp that would do it justice. I looked at used/new and read many reviews on about 20 different set-ups, then I saw a discontinued (and price reduced) Walkabout at Long and McQuade. I know Mesa Boogie guitar amps and their quality, so I Googled the Walkabout and found this page. I already have some stories similar to many on here about the DI reactions and overall wows! Thank You so much for all the info and leading me to this fine product and knowing how to set it up!
