Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

The one band I've been gign' with is a loud country band. I just don't have the clean headroom I need using my two Berg HD112's. I hate to do it. But it's time to put the head back in the Mesa cab and put it up for sale. :(
well, I kind of understand what you saying. I ran my WA out of headroom a few years ago using just the WA 1x12 combo, and then the combo with a Scout 1x12 ext cab. And while I always liked the sound of the Mesa cabs with the WA, I think they are not very efficient designs. Next up was the WA with the Berg CN212, which because of its sensitivity and the overall design of the cab, definitely got more usable life out of the amp, but really not enough to cover the loudest gigs where my rig had to carry the room. Once I paired the WA with the NV610, it extended its useful clean volume level to all gigs I can imagine doing (of course, your usage may be very different). If you like the Berg vibe (and whats not to like) maybe you can look for a used NV(610, 215, 412 or 425). I think Berg still makes/sells the NV412 and has possibly re-released the NV610T.

300w into 2 Berg 1x12's is a fairly serious rig as far as total SPL goes. Your loud country band must mighty loud, and be going without FOH support for anything except vocals, leaving you to cover the room with your stage rig.

IMO/IME, you will miss the WA, but every player has to make their own gear decisions.
good luck

I've gone back and forth to louder/powerful amps vs the Walkabout. I keep returning to the WA. I also used mine with an NV610 and it handled everything I needed to do. I did get tried of hauling the big cab (100lbs). So I currently use my WA combo with a Baer ML112 for most stuff, and am looking to add possibly a Barefaced Retro 610 for the big stuff.

So.......do I interpret correctly that you are using the full combo, i.e. WA amp and 12" cab, in addition to the Baer? Always been curious about this combination thinking the fat lows of the combo cab and the articulation of the mid driver of the Baer might have some synergy.

I tried my Walkabout for the first time and with everything at noon , the preamp was giving me too much distortion. It wasn't a smooth distortion either , very uneven is how I'd describe it. I took the preamp down to 11 and it is fine. Sounds great but , damn.

I saw this sign in the NYC subway the other day, and my mind immediately jumped to my Walkabout.

I have just placed a Telefunken in V1 in my WA. Holy grail! After i got the WA i noticed immediately the E string sounded a little bit muffled and liveless (stock tubes). I changed for a new set of strings and helped out a little bit. Then i decided to go in the tube route and "gambled" with a NOS. I am not by means an ear expert so i can't comment about the rest and general sound improvement or whetever. But what i noticed like night and day is how the Telefunken no just tighten the E string but actually brought it alive. I was really surprised that i didn't notice anything else. My ears only focused on this. Normally when i play from A5 to E12 i noticed this notes sounded kind of "opaque" and "ringless" at E string compared to A-E7 at A. Well with the Tele's this notes sounded actually better at E than at A. Even and alive! The stock tubes sounded good but the Tele was a big surprise!
