Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I probably posted this before, but don't remember for sure. For those using a WA with the Ampeg SVT-210AV, it doesn't sit well because of the cab's handle. I bought four rubber feet and place one in each cup on top of the speaker. The WA sits perfectly and there's no extra board to carry around, which I used to do. When you're finished, pop the four feet into a baggie, and you're done.

Something I've wondered about regarding Walkabout amps. I can find schematics online for all sorts of Mesa Boogie guitar amps and some of the earlier bass amps, but a schematic for a Walkabout seems to be classified top secret. Is that because the ones I'm seeing are for older, probably discontinued models and the schematics for all the current models are top secret? I probably just answered my own question, huh?

Duh...
Don't know how I missed that, but thanks. I think I glanced at that thread and must not have scrolled down far enough. I guess I followed so many links from other searches that wound up saying they couldn't get one that I jumped to a faulty conclusion. I'm used to making a fool of myself...

Hey everyone, I've been wanting to try a Walkabout for a long, long time and never have. There is a local one for sale that just may push me over the edge.

I'm really a lover of the SVT tone and have been playing them on and off for years. Currently I bounce back and forth between my 70's SVT, SVT 2 and V4B.

I love the tone descriptors I hear for the walkabout and its passionate following. Always looking for something a little smaller to take to certain gigs and get me the tone I'm after. I play through very efficient Dually 215 cabs. I'm fairly confident the walkabout would give me decent volume to keep up with my moderately loud rock band but can I dial in an SVT-esque vibe? It looks as if there is tremendous control of the midrange and that is a great thing. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Buy it. Trust me.

Some amps I have owned are more powerful, others smaller/lighter, but none has sounded "better" to my ear than a Walkabout. With Mesa's new Subway 800 micro out, I suspect used Walkabouts will be even more available and a real bargoon.

Well I bought it because @tombowlus said so.:D Very happy I did. Running it through my Dually I cannot see not having enough headroom with the band. BUT that will be the ultimate test next weekend. Very relieved that I can get my nasally SVT-esque tone with with a little more tightness and quickness. I ended up running the gain at about 9 o'clock with my hot basses into the passive input.

Semi-parametrics are sensitive and powerful….this is good. Ended up using the "bass" one at 30 hz and cutting a tad to tighten the tone even more. Settled on about 400-500 hz and 2500 hz with the others with just a smidge of boost for some body and presence. Great little amp. More to come!

Is there a link to where people share there favorite walkabout settings? I've been using my WA a lot lately instead of the big block. Been running mine fairly flat with a boost around 1.2k. Lately I've been feeling it's a little lacking in the bottom. Not Trying to go for some huge low end sound but something tight in the low end with a little more punch and overall growl/throaty sound. I'm terrible at eqing haha. Should I boost/cut around 120-160 or boost/cut around 250?

Here's a technical question for agedhorse or anyone else with Walkabout technical knowledge. In looking at the schematic for the SSP Power Block, they show the output relay with +5v on one side of the relay coil and a reference "to relay driver Q4 on power supply pcb" on the other side. If you look at the power supply schematic, it shows the +5v relay supply but no Q4 relay driver. What controls the delay for the relay?

I think I saw a couple of examples in the one of the earlier megathread sections, but surprisingly there haven't been many shared. The examples in the manual are good starting points for experimentation. I use the "Huge and Round" settings at practice levels and it records well, but it's too muddy at gig volume through my Scout 15 cabinet.

I've run my WA at 2 ohms many times, so have plenty of others. @sooneramt

Thanks @rodl2005 . I'm not too concerned about the load on the WA, but was curious if it was worth the hassle. I'd have to special order them, and any other amp I'd use would have to be 2 ohm stable as well. Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part that I could squeeze substantially more volume that way from my sweet little WA versus using two 8 ohm cabs. :rollno:

The volume difference between 2 cabs at 8 Ohms each vs 4 Ohms each will be minimal, but the head will run hotter and work harder. A much more effective way to get more volume is to add a 3rd 8 Ohm 12" cab IME. THAT REALLY boosts the volume and only drops impedance to 2.7 Ohms. IME it's a Walkabout game changer-providing ample headroom. More cone area is the way to go. A pair of 210 or 115s would also do the trick. Those new Mesa Subway Ultralight 15s
look good, and compared to the current PH boxes will be far lighter.
